Carmen Belle could never have predicted how quickly her world would shift. She had always trusted her family, believing they would be together forever.
But one day, everything changed. The 10-year-old Chihuahua was brought to a Los Angeles shelter and left there without any explanation, and in that moment, Carmen Belle’s heart broke.
She lost both her home and the person she loved most, left in a place she didn’t understand. The shelter staff had no answers for her, and Carmen Belle couldn’t make sense of why she was abandoned.
Surrounded by strange faces and unfamiliar sounds in the loud, bustling kennel, the elderly pup felt lost and afraid.
Afraid, Yet Still Gentle
Even though the shelter environment overwhelmed her, Carmen Belle continued to show her naturally sweet personality.
The staff quickly realized that she needed to leave the shelter as soon as possible. They contacted Frosted Faces Foundation, a Ramona, California nonprofit focused on caring for senior pets.
“Carmen Belle was surrendered by her owner with no reason given, but despite being fearful of her new situation, it was clear to staff that she had so much love left to give,” the rescue shared in a Facebook post.
The organization accepted her and, within two days, placed her in the home of Mary Jewel, who agreed to foster her for two weeks.
After settling into her foster home, Carmen slowly began relaxing and showing her true personality.
The senior pup did face some medical challenges. She was overweight and needed to be spayed. After her surgery and dental treatment, Carmen was ready to begin her health routine. With regular walks and attentive care, she started shedding weight and regaining her energy.
According to Kelly Smišek, the co-founder of Frosted Faces, Carmen’s situation reflects a common trend with older pets.
“As pets age, their medical needs often increase, and the cost of veterinary care can become overwhelming for families. Sometimes, guardians pass away, move into care facilities, or face life transitions like job loss, divorce, or housing restrictions. Sadly, these circumstances leave people with no choice but to surrender a beloved pet,” Smišek said in an interview.
Mary grew very fond of Carmen and offered to foster her for as long as needed while the rescue searched for her perfect match.
A New Beginning Filled With Love
When Mary had to travel, another volunteer, Christine, stepped forward to care for Carmen for a week.
The moment Christine saw her, she noticed how much Carmen resembled her own Chihuahua, Zoe. Soon after bringing Carmen into her home, she became deeply attached to her.
Carmen felt comfortable right away. She adored snuggling on the couch and enjoyed daily walks around the neighborhood.
Christine initially hesitated about adopting another senior dog, since both Zoe and Carmen had heart conditions. But the connection she formed with Carmen grew stronger each day, easing her worries.
The defining moment came when Mary visited. Carmen became visibly upset, thinking she might be taken away from Christine and Zoe, the two who had made her feel safe again.
Seeing how bonded she was to them, Christine knew Carmen belonged with her family. She adopted her, giving Carmen the stability and affection she longed for. In return, Carmen helped Christine’s family heal after losing their beloved 17-year-old pup, Cassie.
Carmen’s story reminds us that even after heartbreaking loss, love can find its way back into a dog’s life. We are truly happy that she now has the home she always deserved.

Crocodile Attempts To Take Down Buffalo
The patient crocodile waited still as a log in the water while a herd of buffalo gathered around to drink from a waterhole in the Kruger National Park.
Stealthy croc hides beneath water surface
This was a particularly large herd and it seemed none of the members noticed the crocodile, whose head could be seen just above the water’s surface.
This is because he dared not move. He was an experienced hunter, using patience to his advantage as he waited for the opportune moment to strike.
The clip shows him moving closer to some buffalo as they leaned forwards to drink. His eyes were just visible to those watching the scene, however, the buffalo failed to notice him.
Animals are vulnerable to crocodile and predator attacks while they drink, as their defenses are down, and their attention is often focused on the water they are drinking.

Crocodile disappears beneath the surface in preparation to attack
When the croc was fairly close, he disappeared beneath the surface and could be seen no more.
This was when spectators at the scene must’ve held their breath. Where was the crocodile, and which buffalo was he preparing to strike?
There were a few moments when the tension was palpable.
Crocodiles are stealthy and strategic hunters, relying on patience, power, and precision to catch their prey. As ambush predators, they spend much of their time lurking just beneath the surface of the water, with only their eyes and nostrils visible.
This allows them to stay hidden while observing potential prey near the water’s edge.

They conserve energy by waiting for the perfect moment, then explode into action. This makes them highly effective predators in rivers, swamps, and wetlands around the world.
Croc launches surprise ambush
The crocodile suddenly struck, displaying a mouthful of impressively large teeth. He lurched forwards from the waters, and his giant jaws snapped with determination and aggression.
He just missed one of the buffalo’s snouts and it was such a close call, that had you been watching from your living room chair, you might have dropped your bucket of popcorn.
Only this was not the movie Jaws, with a shark appearing from the waves out of nowhere. This was real life!
It was a spectacular moment, but also one filled with tension and fear. The entire herd moved from the water’s edge in a moment, and the crocodile’s gigantic form, which had risen into the air as it launched forwards towards the buffalo with snapping jaws, crashed back into the water with a giant splash.
The crocodile was not successful this time, however, more than likely he had been successful on many other occasions. The buffalo got to see another day, and the members of the herd were unharmed.
However, the sighting was a reminder that you can’t ever let your guard down in the bushveld. Animals must continually watch their backs and remain vigilant. A moment of complacency could cost them everything.
