Even as his health began to falter, Sammy’s spirit remained unshaken. In the end, that unwavering strength brought healing not only to him but also to the brother he loved so deeply.
A Family’s Promise To Their New Best Friend
Ruth Gentry and her son, Roan, were devastated after losing their two senior dogs, aged 15 and 17, within just three weeks of each other. The house felt painfully empty, and no amount of comfort seemed enough to fill the void.
Then, Ruth came across Sammy.
While browsing rescue listings in search of a companion for her son, she spotted the Lab mix at the Churchill Animal Protection Society in Nevada. Something about him felt right.
She and Roan went to meet him in person, and from the moment Sammy greeted them with a kiss, it was clear they were meant to be a family.
Roan had found a loyal friend, and Ruth had found a reason to smile again. They promised that Sammy would always be cared for and loved — no matter what.
But soon, their new beginning took a heartbreaking turn.
During a playful moment, Sammy slipped and began to limp. The vet initially suspected a simple injury, but the truth was far more serious.
“I took him to UC Davis and they found out he has congenital patella luxation (floating knee cap) in both legs. This probably predisposed him to his injury in his left hind leg. Sammy,” Ruth wrote on Facebook.
The diagnosis was crushing. Friends suggested that Ruth consider rehoming him because the treatment would be long, expensive, and uncertain.
But Ruth and Roan never gave up. They enrolled Sammy in the UC Davis veterinary program, where specialists monitored his condition closely.
After two failed surgeries, the vets decided that the best plan for him was ongoing physical therapy combined with a wheelchair for support.
Sammy adjusted beautifully. He learned to move again, and more importantly, he learned to enjoy life on his own terms.
A New Purpose And A Healing Bond
Over the next two years, Sammy thrived. His wheelchair didn’t slow him down; if anything, it made him stronger. He loved cuddling, going on gentle walks, and spending every moment he could with Roan.
He even received custom knee braces to make moving around easier.
When Roan was later diagnosed with dyslexia and began a tutoring program, Sammy became his constant companion. Every day, he positioned himself next to Roan, offering quiet encouragement and comfort through each lesson.

“Everyday Sammy is at my son’s side for his tutoring. When he comes exhausted from school and needs to lie down for a bit Sammy is there,” Ruth shared on Instagram.
Even without any formal training, Sammy naturally knew how to help. His calm presence soothed Roan in ways no one else could.
“Sammy has a way about him that calms my son like nothing I have ever seen. This is why I know Sammy will make a great therapy dog someday maybe his mission is to work with kids,” Ruth added.
For now, Sammy’s mission is clear — to love, comfort, and support his best friend every single day. Together, they’ve built a bond that nothing can break.

A little skinny puppy who was lying in the grass once had that same dream.
Sadly, he didn’t receive the kindness and love of humans, and he lost all hope of ever finding happiness.
The pooch had no strength left in his weak body. He cried and curled up into a ball under a tree in a park, feeling unloved and ignored.

When the kind people found him lying helplessly in the grass, they felt saddened and worried for him.
The fur baby was sick. He lost most of his fur, and his body was covered in wounds and crusts.
The giant-hearted humans knew they had to save him. They approached the puppy, sat next to him, and gently woke him up.
When the little canine opened his tearful eyes, his rescuers realized how lonely and hopeless the pup felt.

His rescuers immediately took him home to nurse him back to health. They removed the fur from his body and gave him a nice soothing bath.
The puppy started receiving the necessary medicine.
His heroes were by his side, showering him with a lot of love and offering him all their support.
The sweet pup started wagging his little tail as if he wanted to show them how much he appreciated their help.

The little pup rested his head in his rescuers’ hands. He trusted them, and he felt that he finally had someone who cared for him. He was no longer alone in the world.
Twelve days later, the pup’s wounds had almost healed, and new fur started growing.
His caregivers were glad to see that he regained energy and that he was able to jump and run.
His beautiful eyes didn’t look sad anymore. They were now filled with joy, and the dog had a smile on his face.
His caretakers made sure the pooch had everything he needed. They bought him a bed and all the necessary things. The pup had his own space in their house.

After seeing how loving and caring his rescuers were, the pooch felt grateful, and his face lit up.
Since the puppy was still malnourished, he needed to gain weight in order to fully recover.
He began eating five nutritious meals a day, and soon, his health began improving.
The precious boi felt so much better, and he couldn’t stop smiling.

Two months later, the puppy’s dermatitis was cured. His new fur was beautiful and long.
The pup was no longer skinny. Thanks to the wonderful care and the nutritious food he ate, he reached his healthy weight.
The pup blossomed into a handsome and happy dog.
His caregivers fell deeply in love with him and they couldn’t imagine their life without him in it.

The pup enjoyed his life. His family often took him for walks. He relished playing with them and running freely in the yard, feeling carefree and overjoyed.
His dream of finding his happy ending came true.
