California Rescuers Meet A Senior Shelter Dog Who Hasn’t Moved And Decide To Look Deeper

In shelters where euthanasia rates are high, only a small number of dogs ever make it out, particularly those who arrive ill or advanced in age. Overcrowding leaves many overlooked, stripped of the care and second chance they should have been given.

Penny, a senior dog from Los Angeles, California, was among those left behind. After enduring years of neglect, she was surrendered to the shelter, her body too weak to move.

Her fragile state placed her on the euthanasia list, and her journey seemed destined to end there. Yet, in the midst of despair, one final act of compassion changed the course of her story.

Penny’s Difficult Past

All Penny wanted was affection, but she had never known what it meant to be loved.

When she arrived at the shelter, staff realized she couldn’t walk or even shift her body. Many feared a neurological disorder had left her paralyzed.

Her future looked grim until the Beagle Freedom Project’s Save Our Seniors program stepped in.

The California rescue team wanted to give Penny a chance to experience comfort in her final years. They brought her into their care, surrounded her with kindness, and rushed her to the vet for a full evaluation.

The results were both shocking and heartbreaking.

The veterinarians discovered that Penny didn’t have a neurological issue at all. Instead, years of neglect had led to severe dermatitis, making every movement agonizingly painful.

“Vets feared she was suffering with a neurological issue, leaving her mostly immobile…. But, the simple and heartbreaking truth was that years of neglect allowed a treatable case of dermatitis to become so severe that Penny was unable to move without experiencing horrific pain,” the rescue wrote in their post.

BEFORE ➡️ AFTER Remember Penny? 🐶💛 When BFP rescued this sweet, senior girl from an overcrowded Los Angeles shelter, vets feared she was suffering with a neurological issue, leaving her mostly immobile…. But, the simple and heartbreaking truth was that years of neglect allowed a treatable case of dermatitis to become so severe that Penny was unable to move without experiencing horrific pain. 💔 Thanks to BFP’s Save Our Seniors program, Penny was able to enter a loving foster home & receive the urgent care that she needed to make a complete— and lifesaving— recovery. Penny’s foster explained, “I’ve fostered dozens of dogs, but Penny’s story will always stand out to me. I can’t fathom how anyone could have ignored the suffering of such a tiny, loving soul for so long, to only finally take action by abandoning them at an open-intake shelter where the risk of euthanasia is so high… Even after being failed by humans before, Penny still greeted every member of my household (both human and animal alike) with kisses, cuddles, and trust. It was such a special journey to watch Penny heal!” As animal municipal animal shelters face budget cuts & overcrowded facilities, thousands of animals are more at-risk than ever before. BFP is committed to helping senior, medical-needs animals, but we need your help! All that time, Penny had the ability to walk, but the pain was simply too much.

A Second Chance At Life

Under the care of the Beagle Freedom Project, Penny’s recovery began.

She received medicated baths, daily treatment for her skin, and medication to manage her pain. Slowly, her strength returned, and she began walking again.

Penny’s foster parent soon saw her true personality emerge. Despite everything she had endured, she was gentle, loving, and eager to connect.

“Even after being failed by humans before, Penny still greeted every member of my household (both human and animal alike) with kisses, cuddles, and trust. It was such a special journey to watch Penny heal!” her foster told the BFP team.

After a few weeks, Penny’s journey came full circle. She was officially adopted into a loving forever home.

Now renamed Eve, she spends her days resting peacefully, surrounded by people who adore her.

Once a forgotten senior on the brink of death, Eve now enjoys the comfort, care, and love she always deserved.

Humans Heartbroken To See A Tiny, Crying Pup Lying Helplessly Under A Tree In The Grass

We all know that dogs can only be happy if they have their own family who gives them unconditional love.

However, for many dogs, having loving pawrents is nothing but a dream — a dream that they would like to fulfill with all their heart.

A little skinny puppy who was lying in the grass once had that same dream.

Sadly, he didn’t receive the kindness and love of humans, and he lost all hope of ever finding happiness.

The pooch had no strength left in his weak body. He cried and curled up into a ball under a tree in a park, feeling unloved and ignored.

When the kind people found him lying helplessly in the grass, they felt saddened and worried for him.

The fur baby was sick. He lost most of his fur, and his body was covered in wounds and crusts.

The giant-hearted humans knew they had to save him. They approached the puppy, sat next to him, and gently woke him up.

When the little canine opened his tearful eyes, his rescuers realized how lonely and hopeless the pup felt.

The little pup rested his head in his rescuers’ hands. He trusted them, and he felt that he finally had someone who cared for him. He was no longer alone in the world.

Twelve days later, the pup’s wounds had almost healed, and new fur started growing.

His caregivers were glad to see that he regained energy and that he was able to jump and run.

His beautiful eyes didn’t look sad anymore. They were now filled with joy, and the dog had a smile on his face

His caretakers made sure the pooch had everything he needed. They bought him a bed and all the necessary things. The pup had his own space in their house.

After seeing how loving and caring his rescuers were, the pooch felt grateful, and his face lit up.

Since the puppy was still malnourished, he needed to gain weight in order to fully recover.

He began eating five nutritious meals a day, and soon, his health began improving.

The precious boi felt so much better, and he couldn’t stop smiling.
