Here’s how supporters like you helped us save animals in September

By Brian Taylor 10/11/2025

In September, Network for Animals rushed emergency aid to animal shelters in crisis in South Africa, rescued 10 dogs and puppies during an undercover raid in Kenya, launched a vital sterilization campaign for stray cats in Greece, helped save and treat wounded animals in war-torn Ukraine, and supported the rescue of abandoned hunting dogs in Spain.

Read on to find out how our supporters’ donations made a life-saving difference for animals worldwide in September.

AFRICA

South Africa – Cape Town

Providing emergency support for 317 animals amid abandonment crisis

In September, our long-standing partner, Fallen Angels Pet Rescue, was in crisis. With animal abandonment soaring and adoptions dropping by more than 80%, the shelter’s food and veterinary bills were threatening to overwhelm the team, which was already caring for 317 rescued dogs and cats. Without help, they were on the verge of being forced to turn away animals in need.

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we were able to rush emergency funds to help cover food and veterinary costs for the next month, easing pressure on the shelter and ensuring that the animals stay safe, fed and cared for during this difficult time. Fallen Angels is also in the process of relocating its shelter to a new property due to its proximity to a nuclear power station. We are assisting with the building plans for the new shelter and are on standby to help relocate the animals when the time comes.

South Africa – Cape Town

Helping to rebuild an animal shelter devastated by fire

In the early hours of September 18, a devastating fire spread from a neighbouring property to our long-time partner, The Emma Animal Rescue Society (TEARS), engulfing structures and destroying the dogs’ enclosures. Thanks to swift action, all 250 dogs were saved, but for 10 of the dogs, their enclosures had been reduced to ashes.

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters – and a very special major donor – we have reached our goal to help rebuild new, fireproof enclosures for the dogs. Building plans have been submitted to the city council, and construction is set to begin soon.

There is more good news – with this support, TEARS will now also be able to add a much-needed quarantine block at the shelter!

Kenya – Kitengela

An emergency raid to save puppies and dogs from illegal breeders

During a September inspection in Kenya, we and our partner, the Kenya Society for the Protection and Care of Animals (KSPCA), uncovered a horrific situation in Kitengela, just south of Nairobi. An illegal dog hawker was keeping seven malnourished puppies in rusting bird cages under the baking sun, and three terrified adult dogs chained beneath them.

Together with the local authorities, we conducted an emergency intervention, arresting the perpetrator, rescuing the dogs and taking the animals to the safety of the KSPCA shelter. Despite swift and generous support from our donors and emergency medical care by our team on the ground, six of the seven puppies tragically did not survive – their tiny bodies already too far ravaged by tick bite fever. Thanks to you, the pups knew kindness and care in their final days, and the surviving pup and three adults are recovering and have a chance at a safe, happy and healthy future.

The loss of six of the seven pups we saved highlights how urgent it is to keep fighting Kenya’s illegal puppy mills. With support from our donors, we will continue to fund raids and rescue the vulnerable dogs who so desperately need us in Kenya.

THE BALKANS

Greece – Ithaca

Breaking the cycle of suffering for stray cats on this Greek island

On the Greek island of Ithaca, thousands of homeless cats have been left to breed unchecked, resulting in a street cat crisis. There is no vet or veterinary clinic on the entire island, so it is up to us and a handful of dedicated local volunteers to break the cycle of suffering. Earlier this year, thanks to our supporters, we launched a vital trap-neuter-return (TNR) campaign and sterilized 100 cats.

With your continued support, our volunteers and vet will return to the island through October and November to begin the next phase of sterilizations.

EUROPE

Ukraine – Kharkiv

Funding emergency surgeries and medical care for wounded animal victims of war

As Russian missiles and drones continue to lay waste to Ukraine, countless injured and abandoned animals trapped on the frontline depend on our partner, Animal Rescue Kharkiv (ARK), for emergency rescue and life-saving medical care. Our team saves as many as 400 animals every month, providing critical surgeries and treatment for injured and abandoned animals. But finding veterinary supplies in a war zone is both challenging and expensive, and our partner needs all the help they can get to continue saving lives.

Thanks to our supporters’ generosity, we rushed emergency funds to help keep the clinic stocked and the rescue team on the road, ensuring our team can continue to rescue and treat the animal victims of war in Ukraine.

Spain – Córdoba

Rescuing and caring for Spanish hunting dogs ahead of the brutal hunting season

In Spain, hunting season is about to begin – but for thousands of ‘hunting dogs’ called galgos, the season will bring nothing but suffering. Conditioned to kill through months of brutal, abusive training, these beautiful dogs are used to hunt small animals like hares – and when their owners no longer see them as “useful,” tens of thousands of galgos are abandoned, starved, mutilated or killed every year.

Our partner, Galgos del Sur, is doing everything it can to save galgos, but the shelter is full and the team is overwhelmed. The galgos they rescue are often severely injured and traumatized, and each requires months of care before they are ready for adoption.

Thanks to the compassion of our supporters, we are giving five more rescued galgos a second chance at life. As the hunting season continues, your support ensures Galgos del Sur can continue to say yes to dogs in desperate need of rescue and care.
