A 10-year-old Chihuahua mix somehow found herself stranded on top of a shopping cart in the middle of a canal, soaked, exhausted, and barely hanging on.
Terrified and unsure how to escape, she clung to the cart, waiting for a miracle.
Thankfully, help was already on the way. Both the Phoenix Fire Department and the Arizona Humane Society’s Field Team responded to the emergency call without delay.
A Shocking Sight
A passerby walking along the canal noticed what looked like a strange object floating in the water. But as they looked closer, they realized it was alive.
To their disbelief, it was a small dog, perched helplessly on a waterlogged shopping cart, with no one nearby to help her.
The frightened pup, later identified as Dorothea, caught the bystander’s attention immediately. Without hesitation, they called authorities for help.
Soon after, the Arizona Humane Society (AHS) and Phoenix Fire Department arrived on-site, ready to rescue her.
AHS medical technician Hunter Stribling teamed up with the firefighters to bring Dorothea to safety.
No one knew how long she had been trapped, but they all understood that time was critical.
After a careful and coordinated effort, the rescue was a success. Dorothea was finally lifted from the cold water, her paws touching solid ground again.
“Miracles do happen! We are beyond grateful for the quick actions of our incredible Field Team and the Phoenix Fire Department who worked together to give this sweet pup a second chance at life,” the Arizona Humane Society shared in an Instagram post.
The story quickly spread across the country, drawing attention to the life-saving work done by AHS and their rescue partners.
Recovery And A Sweet New Start
Once safe, Dorothea was taken to the Arizona Humane Society’s trauma hospital for a full examination.
Other than dehydration, tick infestations, and the smell of canal water, her main health issue was a few fractured teeth. Miraculously, she was in stable condition and expected to recover fully.
During her stay, Dorothea’s warm personality began to shine.
“Throughout her month of treatment at the shelter (including a spa day with AHS’ groomer) Dorothea was found to be a sweet, loving girl who enjoyed cuddles and attention from humans,” the AHS team wrote on their website.
Despite everything she had endured, Dorothea remained gentle and affectionate. Her resilience inspired everyone who met her.
Before long, she received the best news of all: a loving adopter had stepped forward to give her a forever home.
Now, Dorothea spends her days relaxing in comfort, enjoying walks, grass under her paws, and the affection of her new family.
After everything she survived, this senior pup can finally enjoy her golden years surrounded by love and security.
Her journey from danger to peace is a reminder that compassion can truly change a life.
