Texas Flood Cleanup Crew Opens Oven And Discovers A Fluffy Survivor Inside

By William Garcia 10/19/2025

The floods that swept through Texas left behind widespread destruction, and the damage was staggering.

There’s no simple way to undo what happened, but countless individuals have stepped up, working tirelessly to help rebuild and recover. It’s been remarkable to witness the outpouring of support as neighbors and volunteers come together in the aftermath.

As cleanup efforts continue, crews have uncovered many unexpected things buried in the debris. One recent discovery left a group of workers speechless: a furry animal was found hiding inside an oven, prompting an immediate response.

A Cat Found In The Most Unlikely Place

While clearing out a flood-damaged home, a member of the cleanup crew opened an oven and was stunned to find a cat inside. They quickly alerted the rest of the team, and more people gathered to see for themselves.

The cat, clearly frightened, bolted from the oven and tried to escape. The crew attempted to help, but the cat was too scared to let anyone get close.

They contacted Kerrville Pets Alive! for assistance, and even the rescue team was taken aback by the situation.

Karen Guerriero, president of the organization, shared with The Dodo, “At first, I was emotional, then I was elated. We lost so many animals because of the floods. This cat was alive and needed help.

Rescuers suspected the cat had once belonged to someone in the home. When the flooding began, he likely sought shelter and ended up inside the oven.

With his owner gone, the cat had no idea what to do next. He was still visibly shaken, focused only on surviving.

Guerriero continued by saying: “I think this cat was just trying to survive. Maybe when the flood rushed through the house, somehow the water opened the oven door, then it closed back up, and he got stuck inside? Things around us are just twisted and discombobulated. I’m just so glad someone opened the oven door and called us.

A New Name And A Search For His Family

The rescue team managed to safely capture the cat and transported him to Freeman-Fritts Vet Clinic & Shelter in Texas.

Veterinarians began examining him right away. He was weak, slightly undernourished, and dehydrated. He also had burns on his legs and traces of mud and water damage on his fur.

After receiving medical treatment, food, and hydration, the team determined he was an older cat, but overall his health was stable. Dr. Key, a veterinarian at the clinic, gave him a name inspired by his ordeal: Easy Bake.

He said: “Dark humor is kind of how we get by. This has been so horrible, and we’ve had so much loss of life, humans and animals, and so much sadness. We try to keep our morale up, see the good things that we’re doing, and all the lives that we’re saving, so his funny name helps us laugh a bit.”

Efforts are underway to locate Easy Bake’s original family, though no leads have surfaced yet. Until a permanent solution is found, he will remain at the shelter.

The team remains hopeful that someone will recognize him and come forward to reunite with their missing companion.
