If shelter dogs could speak, I imagine the first thing many would say to visitors would be something like, “Hey, I’m just a goofy pup who wants to be your best friend for life!”
Or maybe, “Please don’t be afraid. I just want someone to love.”
Sadly, for countless shelter dogs, their looks are the only thing people notice. For one Connecticut Pittie named Biggie, that has been his biggest obstacle.
With cropped ears and weighing nearly 80 pounds, Biggie has spent more than 200 days at the Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter in Branford, Connecticut, waiting for a home.
So far, no one has chosen him.
From Cheerful To Heartbroken
Before arriving at Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter, Biggie had already moved through several shelters. Despite his rough past, he always carried a hopeful spirit and wagging tail.
Over time, however, things began to change.
In just a few months, Biggie went from being one of the most eager dogs in the shelter to one of the most overlooked. His strong build and cropped ears made many visitors walk past him without a second glance.
“Someone came to the shelter the other day and said we are looking for a happy go lucky pit bull and we said oh gosh you have to go see Biggie! And they said yeah we did but his ears are scary,” the rescue shared on Facebook.
Laura, the shelter director, and the rest of the team said that Biggie used to run to the front of his kennel to greet every person who walked by. But recently, they’ve noticed him growing quiet and withdrawn.
“Biggie is getting depressed now and doesn’t get up when you go back into the dog room. We are really hoping to find someone to put the waggle back into him,” the staff wrote.
After returning from his walks or short outings, Biggie immediately shuts down, bracing himself for another night alone in his kennel. Slowly, hope is slipping away.
A Gentle Giant Deserving Of Love
Even after more than 200 days, Biggie has proven that he’s far from intimidating.
He’s a big-hearted sweetheart who loves cuddles, hikes, and car rides. His favorite tradition is getting a small “pup cup” every time he goes on a trip outside the shelter.
Despite his size, Biggie actually enjoys calm, quiet moments and loves being close to people. The staff say he has met children, other dogs, and even cats.
Still, they believe he would thrive best in a home where he is the only pet. This would allow him to relax, decompress, and finally adjust to a peaceful new life.
The shelter team continues to share Biggie’s story, hoping that someone will look past his appearance and see the affectionate soul inside.
Overlooked dogs like Biggie only need one thing: a chance. And once given that chance, they often become the most devoted companions imaginable.
Before his sadness set in, Biggie was known for his playful energy and constant tail wags. With the right home, that joyful version of him could shine again.
All he needs now is patience, kindness, and the love of a family who sees him for who he truly is.
