Surviving without a home is never easy. For many stray dogs, it means losing faith in people altogether, which makes it even harder for rescuers to reach them.
Bringing a stray into safety often requires hours of patience and teamwork. That was exactly what it took to help Lunch Lady.
This resilient pup had spent most of her life on her own until she wandered near Louisiana SPCA. It took a coordinated effort from several staff members before they were finally able to bring her inside.
Her First Steps Toward Healing
Once safely inside the shelter, the team immediately scanned her for a microchip, hoping she might have a family searching for her.
“She was examined by our veterinarian and treated for minor medical issues. After a few days, she was not claimed, so she was microchipped, vaccinated, and ready for adoption. She got her name due to her being such a lady and catching her around lunchtime,” Jessyca Sulfsted, marketing and communications manager at Louisiana SPCA, told The Dodo.
Initially, Lunch Lady was timid and unsure of her surroundings. But as the days passed, she began to open up. Soon, she blossomed into a loving, affectionate dog who enjoyed being close to people.
It was clear she was ready for a permanent home. But first, she needed a little help adjusting to life indoors.
Learning The Basics With Patience And Care
Since Lunch Lady had likely never lived in a home, the staff at Louisiana SPCA started with the fundamentals. Teaching her to walk on a leash was the first step.
“We knew pretty quickly that she was going to need some help,” Sulfsted said.
To make sure visitors understood her needs, the team placed a sign on her kennel that read: “Hi, I need help learning to walk on a leash.”

This simple message helped guide anyone who took her outside, reminding them to be patient and encouraging.
In the beginning, Lunch Lady would crouch low and shuffle forward, almost as if sneaking into a cafeteria. But with gentle support and daily practice, she began to improve.
“She has shown so much improvement, and we’re confident she will be a pro very soon,” Sulfsted shared.
Lunch Lady would thrive with an active family who can continue helping her grow while giving her the affection she craves. She loves curling up on the couch just as much as she enjoys exploring new places.
