Rescuer’s Shock As More Puppies Appear From Basement In Missouri

By David Hernandez 11/16/2025

Sometimes, it’s hard to believe that magic doesn’t exist. This is especially true when tiny puppies seem to appear out of nowhere after it seemed all have been rescued.

In this story, rescuer Donna Lochmann experienced what felt like an enchanting moment when more puppies turned up unexpectedly.

A Surprising Discovery In The Basement

When Donna Lochmann, the chief lifesaving officer at Stray Rescue of St. Louis, received a call about a dog abandoned in a basement, she hurried to the location.

Initially, she expected to find just one dog in the empty house. However, as soon as she stepped out of her car, she was greeted by the unmistakable sound of puppies crying.

At first, she thought she might be imagining things, but the cries quickly led her to the basement, where she discovered three tiny puppies, no older than six weeks, frightened but unharmed.

Carefully cradling the puppies, Lochmann prepared to take them somewhere safe. But just as she was about to leave, she heard barking from another part of the house.

She assumed it was the mother and, wanting to reunite her with her babies, she set up a humane trap to catch her.

However, the nervous mother ran off before she could be caught.

“We never want to leave Mom behind. So, I went back a few more times hoping that she would still be in that area,” Lochmann said.

Searching For The Missing Mother

Lochmann’s first two attempts were unsuccessful, with no sign of the mother dog. On her third visit, though, she finally heard the familiar sound of barking from inside the house. This time, luck was on her side.

As she climbed the stairs, she suddenly heard a bark behind her. Turning around, Lochmann was shocked to see a fourth puppy standing there, seemingly wondering why it had been overlooked.

Lochmann had already checked the basement thoroughly and was sure all the puppies had been rescued. Upon investigating, she discovered a large hole in the floorboards above the basement. It turned out that the missing puppies had fallen through the hole.

When she reached the first floor, Lochmann found four more puppies waiting. In total, there were now eight puppies.

After carefully bringing the new puppies to her car, Lochmann returned again, determined to rescue the mother this time. Using the trap inside the house worked perfectly. With her guard down, the mother, now named Windy Day, was safely secured.

A Fresh Start For The Family

Windy Day was joyfully reunited with her puppies and taken to the shelter for much-needed care. The first three puppies Lochmann discovered went into foster care with her, while the other puppies soon found their forever homes.

Windy Day is still waiting for the perfect family to offer her the love and devotion she deserves.

Final Thoughts

Since only about 27% of larger dogs are adopted through foster care, everyone is hoping that Windy Day will be one of the lucky ones.

A special thank you goes to Donna Lochmann for her unwavering dedication and bravery in rescuing countless animals in need.
