Picture heading to work while it is still pitch black outside. It is only 4 A.M., and the world is quiet. Then you notice something strange. A coconut water box sits near a parking lot, positioned in a way that makes it clear it was not left there by accident.
Curious and uneasy, you walk closer. When you lift the lid, you find two tiny furry babies inside. Someone had abandoned them with no food, no warmth, and no chance to survive on their own.
This is exactly how the day began for a rescuer from Orange County Animal Services in Florida. He spotted the box, opened it, and immediately rushed to help the kittens inside.
Safe At Last
As soon as he reached the shelter, more staff members hurried to assist. Everyone was shocked that someone could leave kittens outside in the cold like this.
What made it even more heartbreaking was the fact that the shelter accepts stray animals without appointments. Whoever left them had other options but chose not to use them.
Amy Sullivan, a staff member, told The Dodo: “We were saddened. We don’t know how long the kittens had been left out there without food and water before they were found, since they were dropped off when the shelter was not open.”
Both kittens were underweight and unwell. They were battling respiratory infections, eye infections, and dehydration. The veterinary team began treatment right away, and slowly the kittens started to gain strength.
A Fresh Start With New Families
Their improvement continued, and soon the shelter secured a foster home where they could recover and learn to live in a safe environment.
“In foster care, they did become playful, happy kittens,” Sullivan said.
Not long after the rescue, another box of kittens appeared in the same spot. Sadly, staff members were not surprised. It happens often during kitten season.
The shelter later posted on Facebook: “Every day during kitten season, the shelter receives dozens of kittens, some of them just weeks or days old. Most litters that come into the shelter are bottle baby litters, and their care is extremely labor intensive.”
The rescue continues to stress how valuable foster homes are. They help young cats adjust to a home setting and give them the stability they need while waiting for permanent families. Many fosters eventually choose to adopt, turning a temporary stay into a lifelong bond.
In the end, the rescued kittens fully recovered and found loving adopters. As the shelter shared, “The kittens have recovered and were adopted. We hope that they have a lifetime full of love in their forever homes.”
