A Hard Beginning For Mrs. Greg
Everything changed the day an animal control officer found a small stray dog wandering alone. He brought her to a nearby shelter, where staff quickly realized she needed far more help than they could provide.
The little dog, later named Mrs. Greg, was in rough shape and clearly suffering.
Since the shelter lacked the medical resources she required, Mrs. Greg was transferred to Austin Pets Alive!, a place equipped to treat severe cases.
“Mrs. Greg was in poor condition. She tested positive for parvovirus and had severe sarcoptic mange,” Luis Sanchez, director of public relations and communications at Austin Pets Alive!, told The Dodo.
Parvo is serious and often deadly, yet Mrs. Greg fought with everything she had. Against the odds, she survived the virus.
Her struggle with mange continued, and her fur refused to grow back. Because of her hairless appearance, the staff worried that potential adopters might overlook her. Then, someone saw her true beauty long before her coat returned.
That person was Olivia. She adopted Mrs. Greg, renamed her Winnie, and promised to guide her through every step of healing.
A Transformation No One Expected
Life after adoption came with its own challenges. Winnie was still fragile and faced recurring health issues that required ongoing care.
“I know she fought through the parvo and mange in the shelter and it took a while for her to be fully okay after being adopted. She kept getting sick and having tummy issues, but she was a trooper and a happy puppy through it all,” Olivia told The Dodo.
Olivia never cared whether Winnie would grow a full coat of fur. She loved her exactly as she was, bald patches and all.
Then something incredible happened.
Little by little, Winnie’s coat began to fill in. Soon she was covered in soft, fluffy fur that surprised everyone who had known her during her difficult early days.
“I cannot believe how much fur she has now. I feel like she keeps getting more!” Olivia said.
Today, Winnie is unrecognizable. The once hairless, fragile pup has become a healthy dog with a gorgeous coat and a life filled with comfort and love. Her journey shows just how powerful patience and kindness can be.
