California Shelter Left In Tears After Family Surrenders Their 9-Year-Old Dog

Even after spending years in a caring home, some dogs still end up losing the security they once knew. Families surrender their pets for many reasons, including medical concerns, allergies, new responsibilities, or a simple change in priorities.

For Nala, the explanation her family gave was especially painful.

Her owners recently brought her to a California shelter, and the senior pup struggled to understand what was happening. She sat quietly in a small kennel with only a plush toy and a blanket, hoping her situation might quickly improve.

Unfortunately, relief did not come.

A Difficult Goodbye

Jackie Gonzales, a volunteer at the Valley Animal Center in Fresno, California, has seen many dogs left behind by the people they trusted.

Still, the video she posted on TikTok struck a nerve with thousands of viewers. It showed Nala shutting down emotionally in her kennel after being surrendered.

The reason her owners gave was simple and heartbreaking: they were moving, and Nala was not part of their plans.

The video captured Nala, an eight year old Staffordshire Terrier, alone in her kennel, staring through the small window as if waiting for her family to return.

With only a blanket and a stuffed toy beside her, the sight of her confusion and sadness moved people across social media.

Viewers rushed to comment on the post, sharing their sympathy and hoping Nala would soon find a home that truly valued her.

“This is devastating. I hope she’s adopted soon.. my heart is broken for her.. I hate stories like this,” one person wrote.

“She’s an old lady she deserves to live her days out being loved,” another added.

Hoping For A New Beginning

According to staff members, Nala had been adopted three years earlier and was known as a gentle dog who enjoyed affection. They described her as fully capable of bonding with people and deserving of attention from potential adopters.

“Nala is an 8-year-old Staffordshire Terrier that was adopted back in 2021, but was returned back into our care. She isn’t too fond of other dogs, but she is a great dog who loves human affection,” her Petfinder profile explains.

Although she is a senior, Nala would be a wonderful match for someone who prefers calm routines. She enjoys resting on the couch, spending quiet time with her humans, and taking life at a slower pace.

Still, she also appreciates a good stroll and would gladly join her family for walks in the park.

“If you’re looking for a couch potato who still loves a long walk in the park, please choose Nala. Seniors deserve a quiet life outside of the shelter setting and we hope her adorable face will stand out to you,” the profile continues.

With luck, Nala will soon leave the shelter behind. She is a loving dog who deserves a peaceful home for her remaining years, surrounded by people who recognize her gentle spirit.
