Simon, an older dog, was discovered wandering the streets of Kansas City, Missouri. His condition was so unusual that passersby could not help but stare.
When he arrived at KC Pet Project, a local animal shelter, his fur was so severely overgrown that it gave the illusion of him having six legs.
Immediate Care And A Long-Needed Grooming
The shelter staff acted without delay, taking Simon straight to the clinic for urgent attention. His coat had become dangerously matted, requiring prompt intervention to prevent further health issues.
“He sort of looked like a prehistoric creature. Seeing him try to move with all that hair, it was absolutely heartbreaking,” said Tori, a staff member.
Two veterinary assistants assisted with the process, carefully shaving him down to free his trapped limbs and skin.
The grooming session lasted nearly two hours, during which more than 6.5 pounds of tangled fur were removed. Simon then enjoyed a warm bath and was placed on medical observation to monitor his health during recovery.
Even after this intense grooming, the 11-year-old dog maintained his curiosity about the world. With his vision unobstructed and legs freed, Simon explored every corner of the shelter with renewed interest.
Every day that he was here, he was healing, and it took him a long time to learn how to really walk again normally.

Learning to walk normally again took time, but Simon steadily regained strength. Adjusting to his new, short coat posed its own challenge, yet he quickly began to feel healthier, more agile, and far more comfortable than he had in years.
A Fresh Chapter Begins
After several weeks, Simon began drawing attention from potential adopters. He welcomed every touch and affection with obvious delight.
“They were just scratching on him, and he was loving it. And then he just looked happy as a cucumber.”
The shelter staff celebrated when Simon finally found a permanent family.
Considering everything he had endured before coming to KC Pet Project, knowing he would now live out his days in a loving home brought immense relief and joy.
“Knowing all that he went through before he came to KC Pet Project, for him to just go out and live out the rest of his days in a home is wonderful.”
