Why This Washington Husky Risked Everything To Climb Out Of Her Kennel

Every dog hopes for a warm home and a family that will never walk away.

For a red Husky later named Luna, that hope lingered as she wandered the streets of Othello, Washington, searching for the comfort she once knew. She studied every passing face, waiting for a familiar voice or a sign that her owner would return, but no one came.

Eventually, rescuers from Adams County Pet Rescue found Luna and brought her somewhere safe. From the start, her gentle and trusting nature stood out, convincing staff that she had once been deeply loved.

Everyone believed it was only a matter of time before her family would come looking for her. Sadly, that moment never arrived.

Luna’s Daring Escape

Shelter life was difficult for Luna. The noise and constant commotion left her uneasy, and she clearly missed the world beyond the kennel walls.

Only ten days after arriving, Luna surprised everyone by escaping her crate and climbing onto the shelter’s roof.

“It’s happened again, except this time it’s a Husky on the roof! Maybe Luna’s climbing skills are the reason her owner decided not to pick her up,” the rescue shared in a Facebook post.

From her perch above the shelter, Luna gazed across the landscape as if searching for a familiar face.

The staff acted quickly, gently coaxing her down to safety. While they couldn’t help but laugh at her determination, they also felt her deep desire for freedom and connection.

Surrounded By Love

The team showered Luna with affection, determined to make her feel loved while she waited for her forever family. They knew she longed to belong somewhere again.

Over time, Luna participated in training sessions and socialized with other dogs at the shelter. Her personality blossomed as she gained confidence, revealing a kind and playful spirit.

Despite her progress, adopters continued to pass her by. Months turned into a year, and Luna became one of the shelter’s longest residents.

Still, the staff refused to lose hope. They adored her and were determined to see her finally find the home she deserved.

A New Beginning In Foster Care

When Adams County Pet Rescue partnered with the Ahtanum View Reentry Center in Yakima to launch a foster program, Luna was the first dog chosen to participate.

Meeting her foster family brought her pure joy. She left the Washington shelter with a wagging tail and a bright smile, finally stepping into the next chapter of her life.

Luna quickly bonded with her foster family, who were amazed by her calm and loving personality.

“She is seriously the [chillest] Husky I have ever seen, and I don’t know how she had been at the shelter for over a year. She is the biggest sweetheart, and everyone adores her,” Brianna wrote to Adams County Pet Rescue, a message later shared on Facebook.

In her foster home, Luna loves curling up for naps with her legs pressed against the wall and happily munching on her favorite treats. She soaks up affection and never misses a chance to snuggle close to the people who care for her.

Now, Luna’s story is one of hope and patience rewarded. After spending so long waiting and even climbing rooftops for attention, she finally gets to experience what she always wanted — comfort, love, and family.

Her rescuers are hopeful that the next time Luna climbs to new heights, it will be in celebration of finding her forever home.
