North Carolina Rescue Dog Develops An Adorable Habit Once She Finally Feels Safe

By John Jackson 01/13/2026

When a gentle dog is mistreated by people she once depended on, the damage often goes far beyond what is visible. Emotional trauma can linger long after the harm ends, leaving some dogs fearful and withdrawn from the world around them.

Trust does not return easily, and feeling safe again can take time. Still, with patience, consistency, and kindness, healing is possible.

This timid dog had spent much of her life being used solely for breeding. When she was no longer wanted, her owner abandoned her.

Her future changed when a compassionate person in North Carolina stepped in and gave her a chance at safety and care.

A New Beginning For Maybelline

When Laney first took Maybelline into her home, she noticed how quiet and cautious the dog was. It was clear she had been through a lot.

But with time, Maybelline started to relax. As she realized she was finally safe, her personality began to shine through.

Her foster parents were amazed to see how quickly she transformed from a timid, unsure dog into a joyful, curious one.

And she developed the sweetest little habit to show her happiness: she would wiggle her entire backside whenever she felt excited or saw someone she loved.

It became her way of saying, “I’m happy!”

Though Laney was her main caregiver, Maybelline formed a special bond with Laney’s husband. In fact, she’s completely in love with him.

Now, it’s obvious who her favorite person is in that home.

Once Maybelline understood she was safe, she began to flourish. Her recovery moved faster than anyone had expected.

Laney shared that each new day brought something delightful: a new expression, a new behavior, or a moment of playfulness that showed how far Maybelline had come.

Healing From Her Past

Laney was devastated when she learned about Maybelline’s history. The poor dog had been used only for breeding and kept outside in terrible conditions.

Even worse, after surrendering her, the former owner tried to get her back. When the shelter informed him that he could only reclaim her if she was spayed, he refused. That made it painfully clear he had no intention of giving her a better life.

Laney was grateful that Maybelline ended up in their care instead, where she could finally experience love and safety.

In the beginning, Maybelline didn’t understand what toys or dog beds were. She looked confused when she was first given one, which broke her foster family’s hearts.

Slowly but surely, she started learning what it meant to be a loved family dog.

Each day brought new progress: a wagging tail, a playful bark, or another happy wiggle from her. It was beautiful to see her discovering joy for the first time.

Despite everything she endured, Maybelline never lost her gentle nature. Her resilience and sweetness amazed everyone who met her.

Today, she’s finally living the peaceful, loving life she always deserved, surrounded by people who will never stop caring for her.
