A Colorado couple was surprised to discover their dog might not be the Golden Retriever they believed he was.
It is easy to feel confident about identifying a dog’s breed based on looks alone. Many people have glanced at a dog and assumed they knew its background, only to discover later that appearances can be misleading.
Annie and Brian experienced this firsthand after adopting Walter, a stray from New Mexico who was listed as a Golden Retriever mix.
Brian had always dreamed of owning a Golden Retriever, and when Walter joined their family, he believed that dream had finally come true. What they eventually learned, however, surprised them both.
A Familiar Look With An Unexpected Twist
Annie and Brian found Walter on a rescue website and were immediately drawn to him. Listed as a Golden Retriever mix, he seemed like the perfect match, especially for Brian, who had long admired the breed.
They expected Walter to be goofy, sociable, and eager to play with other dogs. But after enrolling him in socialization classes, they were surprised to find that Walter had no interest in interacting with other pups.
Though Walter was affectionate and had his own unique charm, his behavior didn’t align with typical Golden Retriever traits.
Over the next six years, Walter grew into a beloved companion. His golden coat and fluffy ears gave him the appearance of a Goldie, but his personality continued to stand apart.
Eventually, Annie and Brian decided to settle their curiosity with a DNA test. The results left them stunned. Walter wasn’t a Golden Retriever mix at all, his genetic makeup didn’t include the breed whatsoever.
In a Reddit post that quickly gained attention, Annie shared the surprising results of Walter’s DNA test. His primary breeds turned out to be Australian Cattle Dog, Poodle, and German Shepherd.
“My husband always wanted a golden retriever so we adopted this NM stray thinking we can have a golden mix. We were very surprised with his results,” Annie wrote in the post.
The rest of Walter’s DNA included Labrador Retriever, Chow Chow, and American Pit Bull Terrier.
Online Reactions And A New Nickname
Despite the unexpected results, Annie and Brian had no regrets. If anything, they loved Walter even more.
Annie affectionately described him as an “aloof weirdo” on Reddit, emphasizing that Walter was far more than a pet, he was family.
Her post quickly filled with humorous comments, many joking about Walter’s deceptive appearance.
“We call these golden deceivers,” one user joked.
“Hahahaha! Omg wanting a golden and getting and ACD is… something. I’m sure he’s a very good boy in his own way,” another added.
“This is a prime example of just how deceiving it can be trying to visually identify genetics! Thanks for sharing!,” the third commenter added.
While Annie now hopes their next dog will be a full Australian Cattle Dog, Brian still holds out hope for a true Golden Retriever.
