Some dogs come into the world already facing overwhelming challenges. Due to careless and irresponsible breeding, many vulnerable puppies are born only to be abandoned before they have any real chance to survive.
One such heartbreaking situation took place in California, where a backyard breeder left behind an entire litter of newborn puppies. When a woman received a call about one of the babies, just three days old, she immediately understood how serious the situation was.
The puppies were weak, barely clinging to life, and desperately needed immediate care if they were going to survive.
A Tiny Fighter Holding On
That call went out to Clanay Reza, an independent animal rescuer in California known for taking in the most desperate cases. The breeder’s neighbor had reached out to her, begging for help.
When Clanay arrived, the sight broke her heart. The litter lay beneath their mother, who had tragically passed away from heavy bleeding. None of the puppies were moving much, their tiny bodies weak and cold.
Among them was the smallest pup of all, later named Lucky, no bigger than a hamster.
Even with such grim odds, Clanay refused to give up. She began bottle-feeding Lucky every twenty minutes, day and night, sacrificing her own rest to keep him alive.
“I never knew if tomorrow was promised for him. Lucky’s first 8 weeks of life I hardly ever slept. I would stay up watching him making sure he was still alive and breathing,” Clanay shared on Instagram.
Sadly, Lucky’s siblings didn’t survive. He was the only one strong enough to keep fighting.
Long Nights And Endless Challenges
As the weeks went by, Lucky grew stronger, but new challenges kept appearing. When his eyes opened, he was diagnosed with a yeast infection and a corneal ulcer. Despite treatment, one eye could not be saved.
“We found out he was blind from one eye and actually had a puncture in his eye and a corneal ulcer. As he got older the ulcer and puncture grew and started causing him pain so at 4 months old we removed his eye,” Clanay explained.
By ten weeks old, Lucky was also diagnosed with albinism, a condition caused by a recessive gene and worsened by poor breeding practices.
His first year was a series of struggles—losing his family, enduring medical complications, and surviving against all odds.
“He’s had a rollercoaster of a life his first year but I am thankful for all the bumps in the road we had with him. They just made my love for him grow stronger,” Clanay said.
A Miracle Named Lucky
Today, Lucky is living the life every dog deserves.
After surviving everything, he’s now eight years old, vibrant, and adored by his family. His fluffy white coat and bright personality make him the heart of the household.
Lucky’s spirit is unshakable. He loves children, enjoys cuddles, and has a silly, playful energy that fills his home with laughter.
Recently, Lucky gained a new baby sister, and he has become her loyal guardian. He follows her around the house and naps beside her, protecting her like the big brother he was always meant to be.
From a helpless newborn abandoned in tragedy to a beloved family companion, Lucky’s story is a testament to perseverance, compassion, and the power of love.
He may have started life with no chance of survival, but today, Lucky truly lives up to his name.
