During one of her routine rescue outings, Amber, the founder of Heart of the Underdog in Texas, noticed a black dog running across a busy roadway.
Concerned that the frightened animal could be hit by a car, she pulled into a nearby parking lot and approached slowly, speaking in a calm and gentle voice.
It quickly became clear that the dog was a nursing mother, desperately searching for food to support her unseen puppies.
Amber rushed into a nearby store, purchased a large amount of food, and fed the exhausted dog.
She searched nearby for the puppies but could not find them that day. Before leaving, she quietly promised she would return the next morning to help them all.
Rescuing The Furry Family

Amber returned as promised, and the mother dog, later named S’mores, led her straight to a garage where she had been sheltering with her pups.
After getting permission from the property owners, Amber entered and began the rescue.
The scene was heartbreaking. The conditions were poor, and the puppies had been hiding behind lawn equipment. But as soon as they saw Amber and their mom, they rushed out with excitement.

The pups were friendly and curious, making them easy to gather.
Heart of the Underdog placed the litter in a foster home, where they waited eagerly for their mother to join them.

The puppies, estimated to be around four weeks old, were given sweet names: Cinder, Flint, Blaze, Graham, Embers, Marshy, Toasty, and Cocoa.
Capturing S’mores wasn’t easy. Amber enlisted the help of a skilled trapper named Emily, who successfully coaxed the mama into a crate.

The reunion was heartwarming. Tails wagged and the puppies bounced around their mom with joy.
S’mores was taken to the vet for a full examination. Thankfully, she tested negative for heartworm.
A New Beginning For The Whole Pack

After spending time with her pups, S’mores was listed for adoption. It didn’t take long before a loving couple from Wisconsin fell for her and offered her a forever home.
Now renamed Maggie, the once-homeless mother is thriving in her new life. All of her puppies eventually found homes, except for Toasty.

The rescue team continues to sing Toasty’s praises, hopeful that her perfect match will come soon.
“She learns VERY quickly and is also crate AND potty trained! She has her playful puppy moments, but also loves to cuddle up for snuggles on the couch. Her foster mom describes her as a total sweetheart,” Heart of the Underdog wrote on Facebook.
For anyone seeking a loving, playful companion, Toasty might be the one to win your heart.
