Dogs have an incredible ability to remember the people and experiences that leave a mark on their hearts. Even years later, they can still recognize the familiar scent of the humans they love most. Sadly, that same ability means they also carry the memory of being left behind.
For many dogs, that kind of loss creates emotional scars that can only be eased with time, care, and patience. Roxy, a gentle soul now living in a New York shelter, shows just how deep that hurt can run.
After the family she once cherished walked away, Roxy completely withdrew, struggling to believe that people could be trusted again.
A Long Road Back To Trust
At Four Legs Good in Pomona, New York, volunteer and foster caregiver Rachel Oldenburger was the first to meet Roxy. Having worked with many dogs who carried heavy emotional scars, Rachel knew that regaining trust would not happen overnight.
In the beginning, Roxy was terrified of everyone. She shook whenever someone came near and avoided all contact.
“She had many unpleasant experiences with people leading up to her surrender and she was terrified when she was dropped off,” Rachel explained in an Instagram post.
Their connection started with quiet walks and still moments. Rachel would sit beside her without saying a word, giving Roxy the space she needed to feel safe.
Progress came slowly. After a couple of weeks, Roxy accepted her first treat. The turning point arrived on day 19 when, during a walk, Roxy approached Rachel voluntarily and asked for affection for the very first time.

By day 35, Roxy’s personality started to shine. She rolled onto her back for belly rubs and leaned into cuddles, something that had once seemed impossible.
Though she still has moments of shyness, her transformation has been inspiring. The dog who once trembled in fear now knows what kindness feels like.
Finding The Courage To Love Again
When shelter volunteer Christina began spending more time with Roxy, a new friendship formed and flourished.
“Shelter volunteer, Christina, began working with Roxy many days a week and their relationship FLOURISHED! Roxy completely came out of her shell with Christina, as well as with her children and resident dogs,” Rachel shared.
Thanks to gentle care and consistency, Roxy discovered joy again. Beneath the fear, she proved to be a loving, affectionate dog who simply wanted to belong.
Christina is proud of Roxy’s progress but knows her story isn’t over yet.
“Roxy was a scared shy dog and her humans failed her – with me she’s happy, confident and affectionate – now she needs a home where she stays that way forever,” Christina wrote on Facebook.
Now, Roxy is ready for the next chapter: a forever home where she will always feel secure, appreciated, and loved for who she truly is.
