Plenty of dogs get excited about letters and the people who bring them, but Rigby took that interest to a whole different level. What caught his attention was not just the arrival of the mail, it was the exact place where it showed up.
While some might call it odd, others see it as simply part of what makes him memorable. Either way, Rigby has a way of standing out wherever he goes.
When he was still a tiny pup, his family turned the mailbox into part of a playful routine, letting him spend time inside it just for fun. Guests usually loved the sight of an enthusiastic little face peeking through the slot to greet them.
The only one less amused by the surprise was the mail carrier.
Rigby Discovers His Quirky Mailbox Hideout

When Courtney Poole and her husband, Evan, purchased their home in Louisville, Kentucky, they were delighted with its cozy layout and all the charming details. They immediately felt it would be a long-term place to call home.
Their Heeler and Terrier mix, Rigby, quickly grew attached to the house as well, although it was not the wooden floors or the yard that won him over. What captivated him most was the porch mailbox built right into their front area.
Rigby became fascinated right away. Courtney and Evan encouraged his silly interest by playfully sliding him through the mailbox to one another and even letting him doze inside it.
It seemed harmless, just a puppy enjoying an odd little nook.
There was no downside at all, except that the fun soon turned into a cherished routine. Before long, that mailbox became Rigby’s prized hangout spot in the entire house.
Growing Bigger But Still Peeking Out
As time passed and the Pooles settled into their home, Rigby continued to grow. The only issue was that his special space did not change with him.
That small opening had once fit him perfectly as a tiny puppy, but now he weighed around seventy pounds and could only wedge his head through the slot.

Even so, he refused to give up his hobby. Rigby discovered that sticking his head out was just as entertaining as sitting inside.
That was when neighbors began noticing the sight. Soon, people were strolling by to greet him, laughing at the unexpected view, and even filming the “mailbox pup” for social media.

Picture walking past a quiet porch and suddenly spotting a dog’s face peeking out of a mailbox. It is hard not to smile at such an unexpected greeting.
Yet one person found it more startling than funny, and that was the mail carrier.
Mailman’s Startled Encounter With A Furry Face
One day, the unsuspecting mailman opened the box and unexpectedly came nose to nose with Rigby. The startled visitor jumped back in shock.
“Rigby’s typically only on the porch when we are, which is a few times each day, so he’s only surprised the mailman once,” Poole explained. “The mailman was understandably leery and Evan had to move him and back up for our mail to be delivered. It was actually pretty tense for a second.”
Although the moment was unnerving, the mailman eventually got used to Rigby’s quirky hobby.
These days, he delivers letters comfortably, even with the curious pup peeking at him from the slot. It turns out that the old joke about dogs disliking mailmen does not always hold true.

Rigby happily continues living his best life in his Louisville home, keeping watch over the porch and lifting the spirits of anyone who walks by.
He remains devoted to his favorite pastime, poking his head through the mailbox to brighten the neighborhood with his amusing style.
Courtney and Evan share glimpses of Rigby’s mailbox moments on Instagram, allowing his growing audience to enjoy the daily antics.

Keep an eye out for this lovable pup and his mailbox obsession. There is no telling what entertaining surprise Rigby will come up with next.
