California Volunteer Races Against Time To Save Gentle Dog Marked For Euthanasia Over Misdiagnosis

By George Brown 03/04/2026

When Boogie entered the Southeast Area Animal Control Authority (SEAACA) in Downey, California, it did not take long for staff and volunteers to fall for him. At just three years old, he showed a calm, loving personality and got along easily with other dogs, bringing a quiet warmth to his kennel.

Even with such a gentle spirit, Boogie faced a heartbreaking situation. He was placed on the euthanasia list because of a case described as kennel cough.

As the hours passed, the possibility of rescue seemed to grow more distant, yet Boogie remained patient, as if believing that someone kind would arrive before his time ran out.

A Last-Minute Rescue

When shelter volunteer Ella and Fur Love Haven Rescue in Oregon learned of Boogie’s impending euthanasia, they moved without hesitation.

They needed a foster immediately and reached out to Ava Taddeo.

Hearing that Boogie’s time was nearly up, Taddeo jumped in her car and drove straight to SEAACA.

She arrived just two hours before his scheduled euthanasia. Papers were signed, and Boogie stepped out of the shelter for the first time into the freedom and warmth of a new beginning.

From the moment he climbed into the car, his body relaxed, his eyes taking in the world beyond the kennel bars. He seemed to sense that this ride was the start of something better.

First Comforts and Surprising Discoveries

Back home, Taddeo focused on giving him the care he had been missing.

Boogie enjoyed a warm bath and soon drifted into a deep, peaceful sleep. A veterinary exam followed, revealing an unexpected truth.

It wasn’t kennel cough after all. Boogie had pneumonia.

With medication prescribed and careful monitoring, he began to recover quickly.

Calm and content, he adjusted to foster life and discovered a new joy: trips to the beach with Taddeo.

Uncovering a Past Filled with Love

Curious about his history, Taddeo reached out to shelter volunteers for any clues, but no records explained where Boogie had come from.

Yet, his demeanor told a story.

He bore no signs of trauma and showed an unusual affection for older adults, leading Taddeo to suspect he had once belonged to an elderly person or couple who may have passed, leaving him behind.

Whatever his past, she was grateful for the chance to rewrite his future. As his recovery progressed, Taddeo realized she could not imagine life without him.

She officially adopted Boogie, giving him the forever home he had always deserved.

From the Edge to a Life of Joy

Watching Boogie heal, grow, and flourish became profoundly rewarding.

“It’s been an absolute journey to have seen a dog that came to me on the brink and literally saving him two hours from euthanasia time to now seeing him thrive and flourish and be healthy has been the most rewarding thing I could ever ask for,“ Taddeo told GeoBeats Animals.

Today, he thrives in a life filled with love, adventure, and happiness, a testament to the last-minute efforts of those who refused to let him slip away.

Heartfelt thanks go to everyone who helped turn his story around at the very last moment.
