Love is what makes dogs feel like they’re exactly where they’re supposed to be. When they’re cared for and treated like family, you can see them loosen up, settle in, and let their softest, sweetest selves come out.
But sadly, not every dog gets that kind of forever love.
Some are left behind by owners who don’t think it through, and suddenly they’re stuck with nothing but confusion and fear. They pace, they wait, and you can almost see the question in their faces, why did the people I trusted just not come back?
A whole family of Golden Retrievers in California ended up living that nightmare. Instead of resting in a home with their people, they were abandoned inside an empty house, left to wonder what was going to happen next.
A Family Abandoned
When officers from Fresno Humane Animal Services learned that a family had moved out and left their pets behind, they quickly took action.
As soon as they arrived at the home and opened the front door, they found two adult Golden Retrievers and a litter of puppies.
Animal control officer Priscilla Wolcott arrived expecting to find frightened dogs and a difficult rescue. To her surprise, two Golden Retrievers ran to her with wagging tails.
Even though they had spent two weeks alone, they greeted her as if they had been waiting for rescue the whole time.
“[T]here was no water on the property,” Wolcott told The Dodo. “There was no food on the property.”
At first glance, no puppies were visible. However, the mama dog seemed desperate to show her something, so Wolcott followed her.
When Wolcott gave her space, the mother led her to the puppies.
There, in the corner of an old chicken coop, lay eight tiny Golden puppies curled up together.
Despite having nothing, their mother had kept them safe and fed. It was clear she never stopped trying to protect them.
Rescued Just In Time
Though abandoning Golden Retrievers is unfortunately common in Fresno County, this particular rescue surprised Wolcott. It was rare to find an entire family left behind.
“This was the first time that I had a whole family of Golden Retrievers abandoned on a property,” she said.
Wolcott was deeply moved by the dogs’ reaction when they realized help had arrived.
The relief and happiness were clear as each pup walked into the crate on their own, tails wagging with hope.
“They were immediately jumping all over me, like, ‘Take me with you,’” Wolcott said.
From their eyes, she could tell they felt safe.
The entire family was transported to Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue and Sanctuary in California.
At the shelter, staff confirmed that Kayla, the younger adult, was the nine-month-old daughter of the mother dog, Tabatha. The puppies quickly adapted to their new surroundings.
“The puppies are now five weeks old and showing their true personalities,” Audrey Farrington, board chair at Homeward Bound, told The Dodo. “Tabatha is a devoted mom who only leaves their side for brief breaks for naps in the sunshine.”
A Brighter Future
Though they faced a rough start in life, the puppies now looked forward to a brighter future. And they soon received some great news.
All eight puppies have families waiting to adopt them, and so do Tabatha and Kayla.
Before long, every member of the dog family will be heading to a home where they will be loved and cared for.
As time passes, they will forget the pain of being abandoned, and the pups will finally experience how wonderful life can be.
