Rival Lions Force Others From Buffalo Kill

Clash of Kings

In the sunlit wilderness surrounding Serondella Safari Lodge, field guide Benji Solms stumbled upon a scene of extraordinary wild intensity. What began as a routine tracking mission quickly became a front-row seat to a full-on lion-buffalo showdown.

Over 15 lions from rival prides had surrounded a small group of buffalo and at least one calf in what looked like a coordinated, yet chaotic, attempt to secure a kill. The open skies, raw energy of the moment, and the thundering hooves of prey and predator alike made for a heart-pounding experience for everyone in the nearby safari vehicles.

Multiple Lions, Multiple Targets

The hunt was anything but clean. With so many lions converging on the scene, the attack was completely disorganized due to the two competing groups colliding mid-hunt.

One lion launched itself onto a buffalo’s neck, gripping tightly as the powerful bovine tried to throw it off. Another lion scrambled behind a second buffalo, desperately trying to latch onto its hindquarters while it bucked and twisted.

In the chaos, some lions broke off to pursue a calf, while others redirected their attention to different targets. The air was filled with growls, grunts, and the rumble of hooves on dry earth.

Tug-of-War Over the Kill

With such a large number of lions involved, territorial tension seemed inevitable. While one lion wrestled a buffalo to the ground from the front, another clung to its back legs, a classic takedown tactic used by experienced hunters.

It wasn’t just the buffalo resisting, however. Between the lions themselves, there appeared to be an unspoken battle for dominance over who would claim the kill.

Whether these were neighbouring prides clashing over a shared hunting ground, or a coalition asserting control over a pride’s success, it was clear that competition wasn’t limited to the prey.

Nature’s Brutal Efficiency

Lion hunts are already intense spectacles, but when rival groups enter the fray, the stakes rise even higher. Coordination breaks down, risks increase, and the chance of injury skyrockets for both lions and buffalo.

This encounter perfectly illustrates how unpredictable nature can be. What begins as a strategic ambush can dissolve into a whirlwind of violence, strategy, and survival instincts.

Even without knowing the full backstory, it’s obvious that more than hunger was on the line.

An Unfinished Ending

The video doesn’t reveal the final outcome, leaving viewers on edge. Did the lions finally bring down a buffalo and share it, or did one group drive the others away to monopolize the spoils?

Perhaps the buffalo managed to escape altogether amid the disorganization. Whatever the end, this footage is a rare and visceral glimpse into the complexity of lion social dynamics and the brutal reality of life on the African plains.

In the bush, survival isn’t just about the hunt; it’s about who gets to claim the prize. When rival lions collide over prey, the fight can be just as fierce among themselves as it is with the buffalo.
