When you work in animal rescue, there is no way to predict when the next plea for help will come or where it will lead.
Even after years of doing it, some situations can still take people by surprise. The unexpected has a way of showing up anywhere, even in places that look deserted, forgotten, and completely still.
That is exactly what happened in Indiana when a passerby walked past an abandoned laundromat late one day. Then they suddenly froze after hearing faint cries coming from inside the dark, silent building. Worried an animal might be in danger, they decided to take a closer look.
What they found inside was both heartbreaking and urgent.
Two Desperate Faces Hidden Below

Peering into a deep pit on the laundromat floor, the passerby locked eyes with two terrified dogs staring back. The sight was shocking: two extremely malnourished Pitties, weak and hopeless, had been trapped there for an unknown amount of time.
Realizing the danger they were in, the passerby immediately called for assistance.

Within minutes, animal control officer Mari arrived, accompanied by volunteers Kelly and Jay from Silverstray Social in Gary, Indiana.
The rescuers had handled many cases of neglect before, but this one left them speechless. The dogs were emaciated, covered in sores, and barely strong enough to lift their heads.

“Two innocent dogs suffered trapped in a pit – abandoned, starving, and clinging to life! Silverstray and Gary Animal Control pulled them from the depths of despair,” the SS team wrote on Facebook.
The moment rescuers reached them, the frightened dogs wagged their tails in relief. They seemed to understand that help had finally arrived.
Once freed, the starving pups devoured their first meal in what must have felt like forever. They had no microchips, collars, or signs of ownership, leaving their past a mystery. But what mattered most was that their future had finally changed.
The Start Of A New Life

The two dogs, soon named Cheer and Suds, were taken for immediate medical care. Veterinarians treated their injuries, provided medication, and made sure they were finally warm, fed, and safe.
Soon after, both received the best news possible: they would not be returning to the shelter. Instead, they were placed in loving foster homes where they could heal and rest.

“After who knows how long they were trapped in that hole, starving and clinging to life, they will finally know comfort—and sleep on soft, warm beds,” Silverstray Social wrote in an update post.
Under the care of their foster families and with the continued support of their rescuers, Cheer and Suds began to thrive. They now enjoy full meals, gentle affection, and the peace they were once denied.

For the first time in their lives, these two girls are learning what it means to be safe and loved.
When they’re ready, Cheer and Suds will start their search for forever homes and this time, they’ll never be left behind again.
