Arizona Worker Nearly Falls Into Sinkhole Before Hearing Cries That Stop Him In His Tracks

What started as a routine inspection in Yavapai County, Arizona, turned frightening in an instant when a utility worker nearly stepped into a concealed pit.

Before he could move on, strange sounds drifting up from below made him freeze.

Concern replaced surprise as he leaned in to look. At the bottom of a ten foot drop, he spotted a tiny dog huddled in fear. The little pup was completely stuck, unable to climb out, trembling from exhaustion and panic.

The worker spoke gently to reassure him, promising that help was coming. He then contacted Yavapai County Sheriff’s Animal Control and explained what he had discovered.

A Gentle Hand Reaches The Bottom

Animal Control Officer Alex Quinonez responded without delay and headed straight to the location. Until help arrived, the utility worker stayed nearby, quietly talking to the dog to keep him from feeling alone.

Once Quinonez arrived, he carefully evaluated the scene and found a ladder he could use to get down safely.

At the bottom of the pit, he met an elderly Chihuahua who would later be named Arlo. The dog did not bark or attempt to flee. He simply looked up, calm and visibly relieved that someone had finally reached him.

Quinonez lifted Arlo with care and brought him back to the surface. The small dog shook in his arms, confused and frightened at first, but quickly sensed that the danger had passed.

Back on solid ground, Quinonez noticed light scrapes on Arlo’s paws and dirt packed into his ears.

“The hole was over 10 feet deep, and the dog had possible injuries to his front legs but was otherwise ok,” the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office shared on Facebook.

He then transported Arlo to the Yavapai Humane Society in Prescott, Arizona. The staff immediately stepped in to provide medical care and comfort.

Although shaken by the ordeal, the thirteen year old dog was otherwise in good health and began bouncing back quickly.

A New Path Forward For Arlo

When no owner came forward, the team at Yavapai Humane Society welcomed Arlo fully into their care and committed to finding him a home.

As the days passed, his personality slowly emerged, gentle and endearing.

“But through all of that he has remained as sweet and cuddly as ever. Despite his age Arlo has got a lot of pep in his step and is ready to take on the day, one paw at a time,” the organization wrote on Facebook.

He was eventually diagnosed with diabetes, but it did nothing to dull his spirit.

“Recently, however, Arlo was diagnosed with diabetes, which has brought some changes to his daily routine. This just means he will need a lot of extra love and care, but despite that his spirit is still as bright as ever,” the shelter added.

After everything he has been through, Arlo remains affectionate, upbeat, and full of hope. With his calm heart and quiet resilience, he is simply waiting for the family meant to find him.
