Cane Corso Abandoned In California Canyon Shows Trust After Days Of Suffering Alone

Dogs are often celebrated as loyal companions, yet not every one of them receives the love they deserve.

Some are discarded, left to struggle alone without shelter, food, or care.

Anderson, a Cane Corso, lived through this harsh reality when he was abandoned deep within Box Canyon near Mecca, California. For days he wandered aimlessly, growing weaker by the hour, until a couple happened upon him.

Stranded In The Canyon

While camping in the canyon, Jason and Katie noticed a Cane Corso curled up near their site. Shock washed over them as they realized the dog had no leash, no owner, and no one to protect him in such a remote place.

Jason approached carefully and offered water. Anderson drank with desperation, his skeletal frame barely able to hold him upright.

Recognizing that he had likely been abandoned, they reached out to Kirk Geiger, co-founder of The Animal Rescue Center Of California.

“When we first found him he couldn’t lift his head, he had a really hard time standing up, his eyes were blood red, like he was so dehydrated,” the woman told Kirk.

Kirk arrived within hours. At first, Anderson was cautious, but he quickly warmed to Kirk and the rescue team.

Kirk was astonished at how fast Anderson adjusted. Many abandoned dogs remain guarded for weeks, but Anderson began to trust within a single day.

When Kirk offered food, Anderson accepted eagerly, his hunger undeniable.

Soon after, they transported him to the rescue facility where he could finally receive proper care.

A Path Toward Healing

Veterinarians determined Anderson was about a year and a half old. Despite his ordeal, his health was better than expected. He was social, friendly, and quick to make new companions.

He passed his behavioral evaluation with ease, showing no aggression. His playful spirit hinted that he had received training in the past.

“He’s just been a joy to have and we have completely fallen in love with this breed. He is such an amazing dog. He’s just the sweetest, goofiest, lovebug and so devoted and incredibly bright, totally low key,” his rescuers wrote.

Anderson’s story spread quickly online, capturing the attention of many. Among them was a man named Jay.

Jay, who already shared his home with a Cane Corso and a Shih Tzu, was deeply moved by Anderson’s journey.

He arranged a visit, and the bond between them was immediate. Anderson had found his person.

“There was no doubt in our minds that they were a perfect match. Anderson took to him immediately and Jay is a natural leader, so he listened to every word Jay had to say,” The Animal Rescue Center Of California wrote.

Jay and Anderson soon traveled to Oregon to begin their new life together. After all the hardship he had endured, Anderson finally discovered someone who truly cared.

Now, surrounded by two canine companions and a family who loves him, Anderson is ready for a future filled with joy. This time, he will never be left behind.
