Surprise in the Savanna
Wildlife photographer Jurgens Potgieter filmed this brief but entertaining encounter in Kruger National Park. It showcases a perfect example of who really rules the road in the African bush.
The video captures two lions lounging peacefully in the grass without a care in the world. They have no idea they are lying directly in the path of an agitated bull elephant!
In a matter of seconds, the elephant stormed onto the scene with ears flared, tail flicking, and trunk swinging! With determination in every step, it stomped forward, giving the resting lions a rude awakening.
The startled big cats leapt to their feet, clearly shocked by the unexpected eviction notice. The pair of big cats then bolt but before we could see what happens next, the video ends, leaving us with a good laugh and plenty to imagine.
Traffic Rules in the Wild
While lions may be the kings and queens of the food chain, elephants are undeniably the landlords of the land. Known for their massive size and confidence, elephants rarely tolerate obstacles, especially ones that nap in their path.
It’s not uncommon for lions to yield when approached by a particularly assertive elephant. With their incredible memory and intelligence, elephants understand their dominance in the animal hierarchy, often using it to gently (or not so gently) remind other species to keep their distance.

When an elephant begins flapping its ears rapidly and swinging its trunk and tail, it’s time for any nearby animals or safari-goers to take the hint. These are all telltale signs that the elephant is feeling irritated or threatened.
While this particular bull didn’t go into a full-blown charge, the fast-paced approach and dramatic display were more than enough to get the lions moving. Fortunately, elephants are generally not aggressive unless provoked, and this one seemed more interested in clearing the path than starting a fight.
Not So Fearless Felines
Despite their powerful status in the predator world, lions are pragmatic. If an encounter with another animal, especially a six-ton bull, doesn’t promise food or territory gain, they often opt for the safer route.
Lions have been known to scatter when elephants, rhinos, or even buffalos push through. It’s not cowardice, but rather a tactic of smart survival.
