The feeling of discovering that a cherished dog is still alive after years of believing she was gone is beyond words. Questions rush in all at once. Where had she been all this time? Had she been safe? Who had cared for her along the way?
That was the reality for a family in Florida when a nearby shelter reached out with unbelievable news. Their Maltipoo, Sugar, had been found.
Albania, Sugar’s owner, and her family hurried to the shelter, and the moment they laid eyes on her, tears poured freely as the reunion they had long hoped for finally came true.
Lost For Years, Rediscovered At A Shelter
The Sagarra family last saw Sugar when she slipped out of their Miami home and disappeared into the neighborhood.
Heartbroken, Albania and her family posted flyers, alerted neighbors, and shared pleas across social media. They even offered a $1,000 reward.
Despite every effort, Sugar never returned.
Hope lingered until they received a devastating call from a stranger.
They were told Sugar had been struck by a car and did not survive. The family was shattered, forced to accept the painful reality that she was gone.
Then, years later, everything changed.
Four years after her disappearance, Albania received another call. Sugar had been dropped off at a nearby shelter.
Shocked and still reeling, the family hurried to the shelter. It was unmistakably Sugar. She was frail, visibly underweight, and suffering from heart and kidney issues.
“Miracles do happen. Four years ago they told us our dog Sugar had been run over and that she had passed away. Today we reunited with her at a shelter in Florida,” Albania wrote in a TikTok video.
Yet the moment she saw her family, recognition was immediate. The reunion was intensely emotional.
Though weakened, Sugar nestled into Albania’s arms, finally feeling the security and love she had been missing.
Albania and her mother, still unsure of what Sugar endured during her absence, brought her home, determined to provide the care and comfort she deserved for her remaining days.
“We are going to fight so Sugar can enjoy the remainder of her life next to her family, where she belongs,” Albania said on TikTok.
A Bittersweet Farewell To A Cherished Friend
In the days that followed, Sugar gradually settled into her familiar surroundings.
She clearly found solace with her family, but her health continued to decline. Medications were difficult, she moved with great effort, and most of her time was spent resting.
Despite the family’s hope and devotion, Sugar’s condition worsened. Eventually, she crossed the rainbow bridge, leaving Albania to say goodbye once again.
The heartbreak was profound.
“RIP to my beautiful, sweet, iconic Sugarcita. You were so brave and loved. I will carry your memory forever and will love you until the end of time,” Albania wrote in the post.
Sugar’s spirit and memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved her. She fought bravely until the very end.
