There are few things more gut-wrenching than meeting a dog whose whole life has been treated like nothing but a baby-making job. Dogs like that usually live in miserable conditions, get barely any real care, and then get tossed aside the moment someone decides they’re no longer “valuable.”
That was Ducky’s world—a sweet, gentle girl whose story started in pure heartbreak. But thankfully, compassionate people showed up at the right time and stepped in, ready to give her the life she should’ve had all along.
The Day Everything Changed For Ducky
Colin first met Ducky through Lil Rascals Dog Rescue, a Florida-based organization. From the moment she saw her, Colin felt a deep connection and agreed to foster the pup until a permanent home could be found.
Rescue staff explained that Ducky had been purchased by a family with the sole intention of using her for breeding. But when they discovered she had medical issues, they decided she was no longer worth keeping.
In an interview with GeoBeats Animals, Colin explained:“Due to some medical complications that she was going through which we’ve addressed since she’s been with us, we were told they just don’t wanna bother with it anymore.”
Instead of receiving treatment, Ducky was surrendered to a shelter. That’s when Colin stepped in, determined to help her heal.
Ducky’s health problems were extensive. She suffered from skin and eye infections, along with a painful condition that caused her eyelids to turn inward. Despite everything, Colin began her recovery journey with unwavering dedication.
A Gentle Soul Finds Safety And Joy
Once Ducky arrived at Colin’s Florida home, she settled in quickly. It was as if she immediately sensed she was finally safe.
“I think she right off the bat knew that I was here to help protect her and keep her safe,” Colin said.
Ducky was introduced to Mako, Colin’s first and only “foster fail.” The two dogs became fast friends, spending their days playing and enjoying each other’s company.
Another dog in the home, Kona, wasn’t quite as thrilled. She often sulked, feeling like Ducky was stealing her spotlight. Colin even noticed her pouting from time to time.
Despite the tension, Kona and Ducky coexisted peacefully. While they didn’t become playmates like Ducky and Mako, they still managed to get along, and Ducky quickly became part of the household.
Eventually, the time came for Ducky to move on to her forever home. For Colin, it was a bittersweet moment. Saying goodbye to a foster dog is never easy, especially after witnessing their transformation.
“I speak for all foster parents when I say that one thing I think all of us wish we could make sure they knew is that they’re not being abandoned again,” Colin shared.
Though it was hard to let go, Colin found comfort in knowing Ducky had found a family who would love and protect her.
Now, Ducky is thriving in her new home, surrounded by affection and living the life she was always meant to have.
