They say that every moment counts in a crisis, and K9 officer Mary Lou showed just how true that can be.

This exceptional Bloodhound, working alongside Deputy Sarah Ernstes of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in Florida, demonstrated her incredible tracking abilities when they were needed most.

After receiving a report about a missing child, Deputy Ernstes and her team sprang into action, with Mary Lou leading the way. Within hours, the devoted K9 brought relief to a community filled with worry.

Following A Trail That Led To Hope

Deputy Ernstes, her fellow officers, and Mary Lou responded immediately to the call about an 11-year-old girl who had disappeared in Wimauma, Florida. With her handler guiding her, Mary Lou picked up the child’s scent and began tracking without hesitation.

Her search first led the team to a neighbor’s residence, where they learned the girl had been given a ride to a nearby apartment complex.

From there, Mary Lou directed the team toward a local park. Her behavior shifted noticeably as they approached.

She began wagging her tail near one of the park’s restrooms. According to Deputy Ernstes, Mary Lou only reacts this way when she senses someone nearby, and this time, her instincts were spot on.

Moments later, the officers realized they had reached the right location.

A Joyful Conclusion To A Tense Search

A video posted by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office captured the final moments of Mary Lou’s successful mission.

“Our units headed to that location, where K9 Mary Lou was able to alert our deputies to a locked bathroom door at a park in the area,” HCSO wrote on Facebook.

Deputy Ernstes gently spoke to the child, assuring her that she was safe. The girl unlocked the door, and what followed was a moment of pure emotion.

Mary Lou’s happiness was unmistakable. Once Deputy Ernstes confirmed the child wasn’t afraid of dogs, she allowed her partner to approach.

The loyal Bloodhound leaned in and gave the girl a kiss on the cheek, showering her with affection as if celebrating the rescue herself. It was her signature way of closing a mission, and once again, she honored that tradition.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office expressed their pride in both their deputies and Mary Lou.

“With their exceptional skills, they successfully located and brought home a missing 11-year-old girl, reuniting her safely with her family. I couldn’t be prouder of our team’s commitment to service and determination to protect and serve,” HCSO wrote in a Facebook post.
Mary Lou has long been recognized for her remarkable abilities. In this case, she proved once again that her tracking skills and her loving spirit make her one of the most extraordinary K9 officers in the field.
