Being a rescuer basically means walking straight into the unknown with your shoes tied and your heart open, because you never really know what you’re about to find. And even the people who’ve done this for years can still get blindsided by what one “routine” call ends up revealing.
That’s exactly what happened to Adriana Figueroa, a volunteer in Florida, when she responded to a report about a stray dog roaming around a neighborhood. It started out like a normal rescue, the kind you think you’ve seen a hundred times, and then it quickly turned into something on a whole different level.
As Adriana followed the dog’s path, it led her right to a crawl space under a house. And what she found tucked away inside stopped her in her tracks.
A Family Hidden In The Shadows
Adriana, a devoted member of Women’s Volunteer Miami, had been told about a stray nursing dog and rushed out to help. Once she arrived, she spent time searching the area, hoping to catch sight of her.
Eventually, Adriana spotted the dog. She was a timid black mixed-breed, barely older than a year.
Adriana moved carefully, keeping her distance so she wouldn’t frighten her. Step by step, she followed as the dog led her directly to the crawl space under a nearby home.
At first, Adriana thought the dog had simply chosen the spot for shelter. She began coaxing her out, speaking softly, but then something unexpected happened. From the darkness, tiny faces appeared.
The dog wasn’t just hiding. She was protecting her puppies.
“It was just her and her babies. She was just trying to find a place to keep them safe,” Adriana Figueroa told The Dodo.
Adriana realized the entire family needed to be moved somewhere safe. She and her team got to work immediately.
For three long hours, they pulled out eight puppies one by one. As night fell, they decided to return the next morning to finish the rescue.
When they came back, they were able to bring out the mother along with one final pup.
Finally Safe Together
Adriana was overjoyed knowing the family was secure at last. With ten dogs now in her care, she reached out to Big Dog Ranch Rescue for help. The organization welcomed the mother and her puppies without hesitation.
Soon, the mama, now named Veviana, and her little ones began settling into their temporary shelter. Each pup was curious, eager for attention, and quick to charm their caretakers.
The puppies, given the names Sunshine, Sugar, Tater, Scarlett, Spud, Rouge, Jerry, Poochie, and Bonnie, filled the space with playful energy, bonding instantly with those around them.
Veviana seemed to understand she was finally safe. Her tail wagged constantly, as if she was offering thanks to everyone who had given her and her babies a chance at life.
Within weeks, six of her puppies had already found forever homes. Veviana and three of her little ones remained, waiting patiently for families of their own.
“I’m ready to start a new chapter. I’ll be your loyal companion, always full of love, joy, and wagging tails to brighten your days,” reads Veviana’s adoption profile.
It is clear that the rest of this sweet family will soon be welcomed into loving homes.
Veviana’s gentle spirit makes her unforgettable. She is calm, affectionate, and resilient, a survivor who now deserves nothing but kindness for the rest of her life.
“Gentle and laid-back, Veviana may be a little shy at first, but with love, she’ll open up in no time. She’s spent her days watching over her babies—now she’s ready for a family of her own,” BDRR shared in an Instagram post.
