Sabrina Garcia was spending a calm day at home when she noticed something unexpected moving across her floor.
A tiny mouse had found its way inside her house and was quietly exploring the space. Wanting to help without causing harm, Garcia carefully caught the mouse and stepped outside to release it.
She looked around for a safe place nearby and settled on a sewer drain close to her home. As she approached and leaned in to check the opening, she paused.
Something about the darkness below caught her attention. It quickly became clear that the drain was not empty, and the discovery would soon change everything.
A Frightened Pup Beneath The Streets
From inside the drain, a pair of frightened eyes stared back at her.
Peering through the grate, Garcia saw a small puppy huddled in the shadows, terrified and alone.
She contacted Suzette Hall, the founder of Logan’s Legacy 29 in Irvine, California, and explained what she had found.
“They couldn’t believe their eyes when they looked down and saw him. [H]e couldn’t even cry for help because nobody would [have] heard him,” Hall wrote on Facebook.
The rescuers named the puppy Donatello and immediately began planning how to reach him.
As they inspected the area, they noticed only a narrow opening, far too small for Donatello to have climbed into on his own. That discovery led to a heartbreaking conclusion.
“There was no way he got down there by himself. Someone had to put him there!” Hall wrote.
Determined to save him, the team quickly found a nearby manhole and lifted the cover. Beneath it was a ladder that would allow them to climb down and reach the scared little pup.
Two rescuers carefully descended while Hall and others waited anxiously above. Moments later, they resurfaced holding Donatello safely in their arms.
“We did it! He was and is nothing short of a miracle,” Hall wrote.
The Road To Recovery
The team rushed Donatello to the Camino Pet Hospital in Irvine.
Once inside their van, the exhausted puppy finally relaxed and fell asleep, comforted by the warmth and safety he hadn’t felt in days.
At the clinic, veterinarians discovered the extent of his ordeal. Donatello had survived by eating scraps of garbage, and a small towel had become lodged in his intestines.
“He was so hungry, he ate whatever he could. He would have died down [there],” Hall explained in another Facebook post.
Despite his poor condition, Donatello received emergency surgery and began to recover under the care of compassionate vets and rescuers.
His strength slowly returned as he was surrounded by love, warmth, and gentle care.
Although he still needed one more procedure, Donatello’s rescuers were optimistic. He was thriving in his foster home, finally learning to trust again and rest peacefully each night.
“[H]e is worth it. It’s time he learns what love is,” Hall wrote.
Thanks to the kindness of strangers, Donatello no longer has to face the darkness of the sewer. Instead, he now drifts to sleep in a soft bed, dreaming of the forever family that will one day call him their own.
