A Shocking Start to the Sighting
Wildlife encounters in Africa often deliver moments of awe, but few compare to the sheer shock of watching a hippopotamus bite a lion. This incredible scene played out near Malelane and was captured by Marietjie Emslie, whose footage leaves viewers with their jaw on the floor!
The video begins mid-action, with the hippo’s enormous jaws already clamped around a lion. The lion, caught entirely off guard, dangles helplessly as the hippo swings its head with brutal force!
Hippos are known for their immense strength and aggression, especially when defending territory, and in this case, it left no question about who was in charge. For what must have felt like a lifetime for the lion, the hippo thrashed back and forth, swinging its victim in every direction!
A Narrow Escape
Despite being held in a death grip, the lion miraculously wriggled free. As soon as the hippo lost its hold, the lion bolted, clearly shaken, but impressively unharmed.
The rest of the pride watched cautiously from a distance, assessing the situation. They were lying down as the attack occurred, not seeming to grasp the extent of the hippo’s wrath.
Unfortunately for them, it was far from done terrorizing. Without hesitation, the hippo circled back and began charging at the remaining lions!
As the massive creature started moving toward them, the lions finally seemed to understand the severity of the situation. They bolted for the bushes, not daring to challenge the hippo again.
Why Did This Happen?
This remarkable sighting took place beside a river, which explains much of the hippo’s behaviour. Hippos are extremely territorial in water and along riverbanks.
While they may seem slow and docile at times, hippos are one of the most dangerous animals in Africa. With canine teeth that can grow over half a meter long and bite forces powerful enough to crush bone, hippos should not be underestimated!
It’s rare to see such direct conflict between lions and hippos as lions generally tend to avoid adult hippos due to the risk involved. They sometimes target young or injured individuals, but even that can be a deadly gamble.
In this case, the lions may have ventured too close to the river or simply underestimated the hippo’s willingness to confront them. Nonetheless, the power of the hippo was incredible and it was evident that it wasn’t attacking to hunt, but to defend its turf.
