Kentucky Border Collie Waits 748 Days In Shelter, And Then Something Unexpected Happens

By Robert Williams 11/21/2025

No dog wants to spend their days waiting at the shelter and looking at the doors each day, hoping someone will offer the simple comfort of a safe home.

Some dogs find forever homes quickly. Others wait much longer, holding on to the glimmer of hope that one day their time will come.

If anyone knows how it feels to wait for far too long, it’s Billie, a young Border Collie mix in Louisville, Kentucky. She arrived as a happy puppy who wanted to play and make friends. Everyone thought that she would find a family in no time.

However, the reality was different.

Billie’s Long Wait

Billie was hopeful and believed her family would come soon.

As time went on, her kennel became more silent. Potential adopters stopped by but walked away. The sad pup watched them with the same question in her eyes each time: why not me?

More than two years passed, and Billie continued waiting.

By the time she reached two and a half years old, the pup had spent over 748 days in the shelter. Her playful spark disappeared.

She tried to stay optimistic, but the long wait took a toll on her. She curled up in the same kennel she had known for most of her life.

The shelter shared a video of her journey on Instagram. It showed the difference between the excited puppy on her first day in the shelter and the adult dog who was still waiting.

In the early clips, her tail wagged and her eyes were bright and happy.

By day 748, she was lying in her kennel, tired from hoping.

The video touched thousands of people.

Staff wrote, “We know Billie’s perfect home is out there, and we’re not giving up on her. We hope you won’t either. Come visit her at Animal Care Society today!”

A New Chapter Begins

Many viewers encouraged Billie, letting her know she had not been forgotten.

The shelter clarified that she needed an experienced owner who could understand her resource guarding and help her overcome it. Resource guarding made her protective of things she valued.

Her shelter friends believed she would thrive in a home where she felt accepted and understood

Finally, her life began to change.

A family visited Billie several times and took their time to connect with her. The pup entered a foster-to-adopt home.

The shelter shared hopeful updates.

“…Billie has moved into a foster-to-adopt home! We’re so excited for her and her new family and are hoping it’s the perfect match,” staff wrote.

The pup was excited about her new beginning in life. Having a family of her own was her greatest wish, and she couldn’t believe it finally came true.

Enjoy your life, Billie! You deserve it!
