A Calm Moment… Until It Wasn’t
In the shade of the African bush, all initially seemed calm. One young leopard cub had claimed the perfect perch on a tree branch, basking in peace and feline glory.

Poised like a king, he soaked in the serenity…completely unaware that chaos was creeping up below him in the form of his sister. Filmed by professional wildlife photographer and guide Villiers Steyn, the scene begins like a fairytale and ends more like a slapstick comedy.

With a mischievous glint in her eye, the young female cub stalked her way up the tree trunk, clearly up to no good. Villiers, behind the camera, couldn’t help but predict the chaos: “How cool would it be if she jumps up with him?”, but little did he know that his prediction would be even better than imagined!
The Launch
Eventually, the female crept right below the branch, and this seemed to catch her brother’s attention finally. He looked down at her as if anticipating what was to come…but too late.

Within seconds, the female launched herself onto the branch causing a sudden weight shift. It was all too much for her unsuspecting brother who flew off the tree branch and went flailing awkwardly through the air!

Not So Fast, Sister
The airborne subadult wasn’t just stunned, he was offended. His moment of peace and zen had been hijacked, and he was ready for payback!

With determination and a little wobble, he clambered back up onto the branch, only to be thwarted by its comical bounce under his weight. He immediately fell off but did not give up.
In a scene straight out of a wildlife cartoon, he reached up and clawed at his sister, gnawed at her leg, and did everything short of yelling, “MOM!” Meanwhile, Mom was walked past in the background not even batting an eye as if this happened all the time.

As her brother harassed her, the female subadults tried to bite back but eventually had enough. She conceded and hopped off the branch, surrendering the high ground and the two siblings went off to follow Mom wherever she was going.

Just Cubs Being Cubs
Much like human siblings roughhousing over couch cushions, leopard cubs use play to test strength, build coordination, and learn boundaries. In this case, though, the sister has no sense of personal space!

Their playful ambushes, sneak attacks, and mock battles help prepare them for life in the wild. While it may seem like harmless fun, these interactions are a key part of their development, just with more growling and slightly more tree wrestling.
A Tale to Remember
This hilarious sibling squabble gave safari-goers a moment to treasure and a reason to smile. Villiers was beyond excited that he captured the whole moment, start to finish, on film.

It was the perfect mix of cute and chaotic and was a reminder that even future apex predators have silly moments. Whether in a suburban living room or the branches of a tree, siblings will always find a way to drive each other up the wall, or in this case, off the branch.
