For many, the idea of having a pet brings to mind cheerful walks, wagging tails, and the comfort of companionship. Yet for some animals, reality is far harsher.
In Natchitoches, Louisiana, residents were faced with that unsettling truth when they came across two dogs enduring deeply troubling circumstances close to home.
The scene was so disturbing that those who witnessed it knew they couldn’t wait. They reached out to local authorities immediately, compelled to act before things grew worse.
Deputies Respond To Alarming Complaint
In a Facebook post shared by the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office, deputies reported being alerted to a case of severe animal neglect just days before the statement was made public.
“On Friday afternoon, August 23, 2024, at approximately 7:15pm, Deputies assigned to the NPSO Patrol Operations Bureau responded to a complaint of alleged animal neglect in the 100 block of Pecan Court in Cedar Grove Sub-division, near Natchitoches, La.” they wrote.
The report described the dogs as so emaciated that their appearance was “horrifying.”
Deputies rushed to the location, but even with the grim warning, the reality was more disturbing than they had anticipated.
Upon arrival, they found two pit bulls “chained to a fence with their ribs and spine areas showing with no food or water supply.”
“The dogs appeared weak, one with flesh scabs, appearing to not have eaten in several days and living in what investigating deputies reported as deplorable conditions,” they also stated.
Animal Services was contacted immediately. The NPSO Animal Services Unit arrived promptly and transported the dogs for medical evaluation and care.
Owner Returns And Faces Charges
With the dogs now safe, deputies turned their attention to identifying who was responsible. The house was vacant when they first arrived, but the investigation continued into the evening hours.
At 8:45 p.m., Alvin Metoyer returned to the property. Deputies questioned him, and he claimed the dogs had not eaten due to illness.
Despite his explanation, authorities gathered sufficient evidence to proceed with an arrest.
“Alvin J. Metoyer, 47, of the 100 block of Pecan Court Drive, Natchitoches was transported and booked into the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center charged with 2-Counts of Cruelty to Animals.” they wrote in the post, adding: “Metoyer remains in the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center with bond set by a 10th Judicial District Judge at $20,000.00.”
With Metoyer in custody and the dogs receiving proper care, officials emphasized that cruelty toward animals will not be tolerated.
This case serves as a powerful reminder that justice will be pursued, and Louisiana stands firm against mistreatment of pets.
