Stealth Mode Activated
In the heart of the African bush, stealth is a predator’s greatest weapon. Field guide Benji Solms was out on an off-road game drive one cloudy day, when he came across an exciting showdown with his group.
As they drove through the bush, they came across a male lion in a perfectly camouflaged crouch. His tawny coat blended seamlessly into the dry grass.

The safari vehicle carefully approached the scene, and it soon became obvious that Benji and his group were witnessing the tense moments of a potential ambush. The male lay in wait on top of a small rise in the landscape, laser-focused with its muscles coiled and eyes fixed dead ahead.
It was clear that something, or someone, was about to walk straight into trouble.
Hyena Walks Into the Trap
As the vehicle’s occupants tried to get a better look, someone in the group could be heard saying, “The hyena doesn’t know.” Right on cue, a spotted hyena ran straight into frame, unaware of the lion lying in ambush only meters away.
The high-stakes moment then played out in a matter of seconds. The lion, who was perhaps too eager or slightly mistimed in his attack, botched the perfect setup.
His prey quickly realized the threat and took off at full speed, causing the lion to give immediate chase in hopes of rectifying his spoiled setup. The two disappeared into the bush, leaving viewers unsure of the final outcome, but with adrenaline pumping all the same.
A Famous and Ancient Rivalry
Lions and hyenas have long been locked in a competitive relationship that results in fierce encounters when dominance, food and survival are at stake. While both species are apex predators in their own right, they often steal from each other’s hunts and will kill each other over competition for resources or territory.
Lions are physically more powerful, but hyenas are no easy target. Their high endurance and strong jaws make them formidable opponents, especially when in groups.
Hyenas are also highly intelligent, with excellent situational awareness and the ability to quickly assess danger. This makes them skilled at navigating risky encounters, even against stronger adversaries.

In this case, it was just one hyena, but its awareness and reaction speed may have saved it from becoming a meal.
A Risky Business
Lions typically rely on the art of surprise while hunting, using cover and patience to close in before launching an attack. Ambushes are a high-risk, high-reward tactic that lions commonly use while hunting with the pride but also alone.
If timed wrong, as in this case, the prey escapes and the lion is left empty-handed, having wasted energy on a failed attempt.
Missed attacks are frequent, even among experienced predators. For a solo male lion, especially one without the cooperative edge of a pride, each failed hunt can have real consequences in terms of energy expenditure and survival.
This dramatic near-miss reminds us that even nature’s most powerful hunters aren’t perfect. One wrong move, and the prey lives to see another day.
