Sadly, it’s way too normal to find dogs sitting in shelters or spending most of their lives stuck behind kennel doors.
And for older dogs, the outlook can feel especially grim. Some owners simply lose interest, and plenty of potential adopters walk right past their runs without giving them a second glance.
For senior mom dogs, it cuts even deeper when they watch their puppies head off to forever homes while they’re the ones left behind. It happens all the time, because puppies are in demand in a way adult dogs just aren’t.
That was exactly the situation for a German Shepherd named Star, only months after her family abandoned her and she ended up in a shelter in Maryland.
Left Just Days Before Giving Birth

Star had once enjoyed a comfortable life in a warm home with a family she cherished and a canine companion she loved. Everything changed when she became pregnant.
According to Star’s profile, both she and her male companion were surrendered because their owners claimed they no longer had time for them. From that day forward, Star and her friend had to adjust to life inside a Maryland shelter.
Just two days after being left behind, Star went into labor and delivered five healthy puppies. Despite the shock of losing her favorite people and facing an unfamiliar environment, Star proved herself to be a devoted mother while caring for her babies.
Soon after, she and her little ones were transferred to a better place, All Shepherd Rescue (ASR) in Baltimore, Maryland, where experienced German Shepherd caretakers continued supporting her and her litter.
Puppies Found Families While Their Mother Stayed Behind

Even before the puppies were officially listed, adoption requests flooded in. By the time they reached two months of age, each of Star’s little ones had already found a home. Their mother, however, was left behind.
Alongside the heartbreak of watching her babies leave one after another, Star also faced lingering health issues.
“Unfortunately, Star’s previous owner neglected important aspects of her health, failing to spay and provide monthly heartworm preventatives,” it is stated in her bio on the ASR website.
The rescue team accepted full responsibility for her care and recovery, though they admitted it would not be a quick or easy journey.
Despite these challenges, Star never lost her radiant spirit. She continued to show affection toward people, even after the betrayal she had endured so recently.
A Faithful Spirit Still Hoping For A Home

The Baltimore rescue group is working tirelessly to help Star find the family she deserves. In her adoption profile, they highlight her qualities, hoping someone will recognize her true value.
“Adopting Star means embracing a loyal companion, an incredibly sweet, friendly, and gorgeous German Shepherd,” it is stated in Star’s bio. “Without hesitation, she greets everyone who comes to visit!”
Star gets along well with other dogs but could also thrive as the only pet. She loves people and would flourish with active adults, as German Shepherds naturally enjoy exercise and adventure.
She is crate-trained, loving, obedient, eager to please, intelligent, gentle, and playful.

“By opening your heart and home to this fantastic dog, you’ll not only provide Star with the love and care she deserves but also become a part of her incredible journey towards a brighter future,” it is stated in the end.
