Meet Halo, a fragile Pitbull discovered deep in a Mississippi forest, curled tightly into herself and barely holding on.
Rescuers had been alerted about an allegedly aggressive dog roaming the woods, but what they encountered was heartbreaking.
Halo wasn’t aggressive at all.
She was blind, severely undernourished, and so weak that she likely wouldn’t have lasted much longer without intervention.
Starving And Alone In The Trees
Stacey and her husband, Mike, are longtime rescuers working throughout Mississippi.
If you’ve ever adopted from Lucky Dog Refuge chances are Stacey played a role in making it happen.
Halo became one of their many rescue stories.
When they found her, she looked skeletal, just skin stretched over bones. Using food to coax her out, Stacey and Mike managed to bring her to safety, though her condition was deeply concerning.
Her appearance made it clear she had gone without basic necessities like food and shelter for a long time, possibly years.
She had likely been used for breeding and discarded when no longer deemed useful.
“Her ears were cut with a pair of scissors, and she was most likely used for breeding. One eye is injured and damaged, the other is blind probably from an eye disease that should have been treated,” Stacey Frazier wrote in her Facebook post.
It’s painful to imagine what she endured, but at last, she was safe.
Recovery Begins With Love
They named her Halo, uncertain if she would survive, but she did.
Stacey brought her home and began treatment with antibiotics and proper meals. There were moments of uncertainty, but Halo showed remarkable strength.
“We knew that her sight was definitely impaired, but we didn’t know if she was fully blind until the doctor confirmed it. We do think that she can see shadows, but she’ll just walk right into a telephone pole,” Jessica from Lucky Dog Refuge told The Dodo.
In Stacey’s care, Halo experienced kindness for the first time. She was truly happy.
Her recovery took several months. Once she was strong enough, she was transferred to the rescue facility in Connecticut.
A New Life And A Forever Home
When Halo arrived at the shelter, she was full of joy, a completely transformed dog.
The team quickly learned she had a soft spot for ice cream and lit up every time she got one.
“She lets us know every day that she’s grateful for everything that she has now. She’s just an angel,” Jessica said.
Still, one thing was missing: a permanent family. Then something wonderful happened. Halo was adopted by a loving family, and they also welcomed her best friend, Layne. Now the two live together, side by side.
