For Donna Lochmann, the Chief Life-Saving Officer at Stray Rescue of St. Louis, Missouri, that calling has shaped the course of her entire life.
Her goal has always been simple and unwavering: get as many dogs as possible out of harm’s way and into care.
Over the years, Donna has helped lead countless dogs toward forever homes in communities all across the country.
Still, one rescue rose above the rest, unfolding in a way unlike anything she had ever experienced before.
This time, something completely unexpected was waiting for her, and it would alter everything.
A Starving Mother With A Secret
Donna and her team had been working nonstop to rescue Hulu, a stray female dog who had been roaming the streets for several weeks.
Hulu was timid and severely underweight, clearly in desperate need of help. But catching her was no easy task.
She wasn’t just a stray, she was also a nursing mother, caring for a litter of newborn puppies hidden somewhere nearby. Though she had managed to keep them safe, locating them was a major challenge for the rescue team.
Then, one day, everything shifted.
The team set a humane trap filled with food to lure Hulu. After hours of waiting, the hungry mother finally stepped inside, allowing Donna and her team to secure her safely.
Just moments later, Donna and another volunteer heard faint whimpers coming from a nearby vacant house. They followed the sounds to a crawl space beneath the structure, and what they discovered left them stunned.
Nestled together on a pile of debris was a large group of tiny puppies. Their eyes had only recently opened, and although they were small and delicate, they appeared surprisingly healthy.
Without a second thought, Donna crawled into the narrow space to reach them. As she got closer, she realized there were ten puppies in total.
“A mom and 10 puppies have been rescued from the mean streets. Although full of milk, she was skin and bones. You’ll never believe where we found her puppies,” Stray Rescue of St. Louis wrote in a Facebook post.
A Safe Haven For A Devoted Mom And Her Babies
After carefully retrieving the puppies, the team brought them back to the shelter and placed them in a warm, quiet room with their mother.
Hulu immediately proved to be a devoted caregiver. She nursed her pups, kept them close, and never left their side.
Everyone at the rescue was amazed by her strength and dedication. Despite having no food, shelter, or comfort, she had managed to keep her babies alive.
Now, none of them would ever have to face the harshness of the streets again.
Months later, Hulu and her puppies found loving homes where they could thrive. Hulu herself was adopted by a woman named Debbie and her family.
Today, Hulu enjoys a spacious home, plenty of adventures, and endless affection from her human companions and fellow dogs. Her life is now filled with the joy she always deserved.
Debbie shared a touching message of gratitude for Donna’s role in Hulu’s rescue. “My Hulu was rescued three years ago. She is a really funny quirky dog. Thank you Donna Lochmann for always saying yes to a rescue,” she wrote on Facebook.
Because of Donna and her dedicated team, Hulu and her puppies were given the chance to live, grow, and be loved. Their journey ended in the best way imaginable.
