While traveling through Blue Springs, Missouri, a Farm To Able volunteer stumbled upon a scene that stopped her cold. There, in the center of a bustling highway, was a tiny, defenseless puppy—tethered to a crate and completely alone.
She didn’t pause to think. She pulled her car to the side and hurried straight to the shaking pup. With careful hands, she scooped him up and placed him inside her car, surrounding him with the warmth and security he’d been missing.
The puppy—who would later be given the name Sullivan—melted into her embrace almost instantly. The panic in his face eased away, replaced by a quiet calm, as though he knew this moment marked a turn toward safety.
She promptly reached out to Animal Control to report what had happened. Once Sullivan’s required five-day stray hold ended and no one stepped forward to reclaim him, the focus shifted to finding him a safe haven. Unfortunately, every nearby shelter was stretched beyond capacity, leaving no space to take him in.
A Sanctuary Steps In To Help
Determined not to give up, the volunteer reached out to Sheriee, the founder of a local sanctuary.
Moved by Sullivan’s story, Sheriee agreed to welcome him into her care, offering a loving foster home while helping him find a permanent family.
Once at the sanctuary, Sullivan began to settle in. He quickly adapted to his new surroundings and found companionship among the sanctuary’s other animals, including pigs, cows, chickens, and horses.
Despite the trauma he had endured, Sullivan remained gentle and curious, quietly hopeful that his future would be brighter.
As Sullivan adjusted to life at the sanctuary, Sheriee began searching for the perfect adopter.
The more time she spent with him, the more she realized how special he was.
“He’s got a calmness about him that’s very, very unique for a puppy,” Sheriee told Cuddle Buddies.
She started sending videos of Sullivan to her son, James, who had always dreamed of having a dog. One day, she jokingly suggested he adopt Sullivan, and to her surprise, James agreed.
An Instant Connection
From the moment James met Sullivan, it was clear they were meant to be.
“He said there was just something about it where he just felt like it was, that was his dog,” Sheriee added.
Their bond formed instantly. Sullivan melted into James’s arms, radiating trust and happiness.
Sheriee was filled with joy, knowing Sullivan had found the person he was meant to be with.
“He will never have to worry whether or not his human loves him or is coming back for him… He will always be safe, protected & loved beyond measure,” she wrote on Instagram.
After spending three weeks at the sanctuary, Sullivan left for his new home in Denver, Colorado, ready to begin a fresh chapter.
Now thriving in his forever home, Sullivan enjoys hiking trips and snowy adventures with his new dad. His days are filled with affection, security, and the thrill of exploring the world alongside someone who truly loves him.
