Mother Forced Lion Cubs To Cross The Road

By Anthony Miller 10/24/2025

All deadly predators have to start out somewhere, and these deadly lions started out as mischievous cubs that managed to channel a very chaotic energy into something as simple as crossing the road.

Steyn Jacobsohn caught this sighting on camera in the Kruger National Park. Along with the rest of the group, Steyn spotted two adult lionesses first on the S28 road, but they were all amazed when five little cubs emerged from the tall grass.

Watch Now:

These little cubs were incredibly cute, but having them try to cross the road was no doubt a stressful time for both lionesses, which had to wrangle the energetic cubs each and every time they got distracted.

Instantly Distracted

The adorable lion cubs were small enough to blend into the long grass perfectly, so Steyn only saw them clearly when the small group of lions moved into a more open area.

From there the lions began crossing the road, with one of the adult lionesses leading the way. The cubs started out strong, padding across the road after her, but then they just quite suddenly ran out of steam.

The cubs were so close, they were almost at the other side, but right at the last second they seemed to decide that crossing the road wasn’t actually what they’d been planning to do at all, and they sat down.

Back Again

When they got going again they were actually heading the wrong way, potentially distracted by the interesting looking vehicles which looked much more entertaining than some more long grass at the side of the road.

After a lot of running about, two of the cubs did manage to follow the lioness that had gone before them, getting fully over the road, only to reappear mere seconds afterwards heading the wrong way again.

Clearly the road was far too interesting a place for them to leave behind so quickly, and they wanted to continue playing. The lionesses were eager to be on their way, however, and the cubs were going to have to get in line.

An Exasperated Mother

It took several minutes of the cubs running around in every which way on their little legs before the lionesses returned to start rounding them up, and get them ready to cross the road for good.

The cubs didn’t seem to be aware of just how much they were antagonizing the adults until the lionesses started picking them up in their jaws and ferrying them across the road.

This put a quick end to the games the cubs were playing, although Steyn told Latest Sightings that one of the lionesses carried one of the cubs, leaving the second to try and get control of the other four, a seemingly impossible task.

Across The Road One Way Or Another

Although lion cubs don’t ever seem to tire of being naughty, they did eventually understand they were definitely going to be crossing this road one way or another.

Lioness’s carrying their cubs in their mouths is perfectly safe, but it doesn’t look like the most comfortable method of transportation. Nevertheless, the cubs kept getting distracted, and the adults ended up having to ferry them across.
