New Jersey Dog Saved From A Rocky Ledge Becomes A Family’s Anchor In Their Hardest Hours

By William Martinez 11/09/2025

When Daniele, a rescuer with Jersey Pits in New Jersey, overheard animal control mention a dog stuck high on a cliff, she moved without hesitation.

She hurried down the block, scaled the steep hillside, and scanned the jagged terrain for any sign of the pup. When she finally spotted him, she called out gently, hoping to coax him down. The scared dog stayed frozen, offering no response at all.

His lack of reaction told Daniele this mission would require far more care and patience than usual.

A Rescue Mission On The Cliffside

Determined to reach him, Daniele climbed higher along the uneven rock. As she approached, the Pittie’s fear intensified.

“He was so disconnected, he was shaking like a leaf. Every time I would get near him he would actually back up more. So he was getting closer to the ledge,” Daniele told  The Dodo..

She maneuvered carefully until she managed to corner him, blocking the path to the drop. He continued trembling, too distressed to move.

“So, luckily, I had my cell phone with me, and I called animal control. And I was like ‘I have him in a spot where I could probably get him but I need help’,” she recalled.

Help arrived swiftly. Together, they secured him with a catch pole and guided him with slow precision down the cliffside. He was transported straight to animal control for safety.

A Frightened Dog Tries To Cope Inside The Shelter

Inside the shelter, the Pit Bull’s trauma was unmistakable. He pressed himself into the kennel wall and trembled, refusing to budge.

Staff scanned for a microchip, but nothing came up.

“Since he is a stray, he legally, in New Jersey, had to go on a seven-day stray hold,” Daniele explained.

He was not left to face it alone. Daniele showed up daily, walked him when she could, and spoke softly through the bars, gradually building trust.

Over days of gentle routine, the dog began to soften. He even wrapped his paws around Daniele in brief, hesitant hugs when she arrived.

After his stray hold ended, he was cleared for foster care. A couple came forward and offered to open their home to him temporarily.

The pup, now named Benny, arrived with a burst of energy and a busy mind.

“He threw himself everywhere. He was energetic. We noticed right away that he had really bad separation anxiety,” said Jessica, his foster mom.

At the start, Benny struggled with manners. He tore up their office and pushed boundaries to test what was safe. Their resident dog, Sky, did not appreciate the chaos.

“She just kept looking at him, and then looking at us like ‘When is he going home? This guy is crazy!’” recalled Veron, his foster dad.

Time and consistency changed things. Eventually, Benny and Sky settled, and the pair were soon napping side by side, a quiet sign of progress.

A Heartbreaking Diagnosis

Soon after, Jessica and Veron noticed subtle shifts in Sky’s movement and behavior. A vet visit brought devastating news, Sky had osteosarcoma, a serious bone cancer.

Benny responded to the new atmosphere with surprising sensitivity.

“He just gave us little laughs. His high energy changed a little bit, because I think he was starting to understand that Sky was going through something very difficult,” Veron said.

When Sky eventually crossed the rainbow bridge, Benny offered comfort in small, steady ways, helping his grieving family keep going.

By then, it was clear that Benny was not simply a foster dog anymore. He had become woven into their lives.

A Forever Family Embraces Benny’s Gentle Heart

Through sorrow and healing, Jessica and Veron recognized the gift Benny had become.

“We are so happy that he came at the right opportunity. We feel like that was part of Sky’s cosmic energy. All the stars aligned for him to be with us during this difficult time,” Jessica shared.

From a terrified dog isolated on a cliff to a loved family member, Benny’s path carried quiet courage at every turn.

He eased a deep ache in his foster parents’ hearts while honoring the memory of the dog who came before him.

Benny, you have shown courage, love, and resilience beyond words. Sky is surely watching proudly, knowing you are keeping her family steady and loved.

Good boy, Benny.
