The route was routine, the kind of day that blended into the one before it. She’d walked the same blocks hundreds of times, delivering letters, waving to neighbors, not expecting anything out of the ordinary.
But as she passed a storm drain, something made her pause. The cover sat slightly off-center, and from beneath it came a faint sound she couldn’t quite place.
She stopped, listened again, and leaned closer, unsure if she’d imagined it. The noise was soft, but it was there.
Curiosity replaced her schedule, and she crouched down to see what, or who, was calling from below. What this New York woman found shocked her.
Shocking Discovery In The Storm Drain
Not too long ago, a mail carrier, Kailey Chase, was just doing her job when something grabbed her attention on the street.
She approached a building and saw a mysterious animal stuck in the storm drain. It’s unclear how it got there, but Chase wanted to help anyway.
After getting a closer look, she realized it was a squirrel that was already exhausted from trying to free itself from this position.
Chase told The Dodo: “As I got closer, I realized that it was stuck in the grate. “It looked like he [or] she had totally given up.”
The New York mail carrier tried to get close to the squirrel, but it tried to squirm away. It was scared of other humans and Chase needed to do something to help.
What baffled her was how this squirrel was even able to get stuck here. Chase worked as a mail carrier. She had seen a lot of things, but never anything like this.
He Is Finally Free
The only way to help the squirrel was to loosen the grate, lift it up and hopefully the squirrel would be able to get out of that spot.
She said: “I didn’t want to yank on the poor thing and risk hurting it. I tried taking a gentle approach, but of course those grates are super heavy and I was worried if I moved it around too much that with my luck, the grate would fall down into the hole.”
It didn’t work at first, so she had to figure out something else that would help. She grabbed a rock and used it to prop up the grate.
Eventually, she was able to free the poor squirrel. She then wrapped the animal in her sweater and let it just relax after everything it’s been through.
The poor squirrel must have been exhausted. After a while, she freed the animal and let it run into the wild.
Since Chase was a bit worried about the well-being of the animal, she contacted someone who lived nearby to check up on the squirrel if possible.
Luckily, everything turned out great in the end. If not for Chase, who knows how this entire situation would unfold? The squirrel was lucky to meet such a kind person.
