Karenlynn Stracher has spent years stepping into danger whenever an animal’s safety was on the line. She never hesitates, no matter the risks.
Her dedication doesn’t stop with wildlife. Stracher has also built a long career as a paramedic in New York City, saving countless human lives. That experience gave her the ability to face emergencies with calm precision, always focused on helping whoever is in need.
So when word came that a wild animal was trapped in the middle of a nearby highway, she didn’t waste a second. She dropped everything and rushed straight to the scene, determined to make a difference.
Racing Into Traffic To Reach The Frightened Animal
Navigating the congestion of New York streets, Stracher arrived promptly. From across the highway, she noticed a small creature frozen in place, nervously watching the cars speed past, completely immobilized by fear.
A closer glance revealed the stranded animal was a possum, clearly panicked and caught amid the continuous traffic flow. Recognizing the urgency, Stracher knew swift action was critical.
Normally, she would have contacted the authorities to halt traffic, but with no officers available, she had to manage the dangerous rescue on her own.
“I got all of my equipment ready, and then I watched traffic patterns for a few minutes,” Stracher told The Dodo. “When I saw a break in traffic long enough for me to cross to the median, I took the opportunity.”
Upon reaching the median, she approached the possum cautiously, holding a fleece blanket to safely secure him.
The animal was overstimulated and panicked, giving her only one chance to succeed. With careful precision, she covered the possum with the blanket, lifted him, and carried him safely to her vehicle.
As with many of her daring rescues, her efforts concluded successfully.
Back To His Natural Habitat
Recognizing that the highway was no place for the possum, Stracher first brought him home to examine him for injuries.
The possum resisted the examination, frightened by the handling, but Stracher remained patient and gentle, understanding that such behavior was natural. She completed the check efficiently and confirmed he was unharmed.
Once satisfied with his condition, she arranged for his release into a safe, natural environment.
“I’m happy that he has a place nearby that is safe and provides him access to water and natural foods,” Stracher said.
Finally, the possum was returned to his wild home, free and unharmed. Though he may not have appreciated the intervention, he gained a second chance at life thanks to a rescuer unwilling to leave him in danger.
