In rural Oklahoma, three dogs were left behind along a quiet, empty road, waiting as if they believed their owners might come back for them. Day after day, they remained near the roadside, retreating into a tin culvert whenever they needed protection from the elements.
Even after a week had passed, the pups were still lingering at the same intersection when a kindhearted passerby noticed them and contacted rescuer Alysse Matlock. Without a moment’s hesitation, Alysse stepped in and set out to bring the dogs to safety.
Rescue And Rebirth
When Alysse arrived at the scene, she immediately noticed that Oakley, a Black Lab mix, was in the worst shape. He was the first dog she was able to rescue, with the other two dogs being caught later.
All three were brought to a shelter, where they received proper care and attention.
Alysse took Oakley home with her, and once he felt the love and safety of his new environment, he began to relax. It didn’t take long for his sweet, playful personality to emerge, showing just how thankful he was to be safe.
“He is such a sweet, smart dog that lives to please people. It angered me that people could be so cruel,” Alysse said.
She began sharing Oakley’s journey on Instagram, updating her followers and reminding everyone that no dog should ever be abandoned in such a heartless way.

A New Life Awaits
Under Alysse’s care, Oakley received a bath, medical care, and a thorough veterinary check-up. She reached out to Safe Haven Animal Rescue, who graciously agreed to cover his medical expenses during his foster period.
With consistent love and attention, Oakley recovered quickly and thrived in Alysse’s home. But she knew it was time to help him find a permanent family who would cherish him forever.
One day, a family from Minnesota saw Oakley’s story online and immediately fell in love. They drove all the way to meet him. Upon meeting Oakley, they knew he was meant to be part of their family.
“He was such an easy dog. He got along with everyone and anyone from the very beginning!” they shared.
Now, Oakley lives happily with his new family, who documents his adventures on his very own Instagram account.
A Lesson In Compassion
Oakley’s story is a beautiful reminder of resilience and the importance of kindness. As Alysse said, no dog should ever be abandoned by the side of the road.
