When a small pug named Maple first emerged from her crate, everything around her felt unfamiliar. The world outside was overwhelming, and she didn’t know what to expect.
After spending three difficult years in a breeding operation in Iowa, Maple was finally welcomed into the care of Camp Companion. The team had been waiting to offer her the safety she had never known.
Soon after, she was placed with her foster parents, Izzy and Tyler. They gave Maple a home filled with warmth and security, gently helping her begin to trust people again.
Maple had no idea, but she had just entered the softest, kindest place she would ever know.
A Fragile Start Reveals Years Of Neglect
Izzy and Tyler were overjoyed to see Maple take her first steps out of the crate. But their excitement quickly turned to sorrow when they saw the extent of her neglect.
“She was filthy, under-groomed and flinched every time we went to pet her. Puppy mills often keep dogs in overcrowded cages with little to no medical care, proper nutrition, or opportunities for exercise and play. These mamas never get to experience the joy of being pets — just the endless cycle of breeding,” Maple’s foster parents wrote on Instagram.
Despite her past, Maple had finally found what she had longed for: a sense of safety and care.
Building Trust One Day At A Time
In the days that followed, Izzy and Tyler worked patiently to help Maple adjust. Their efforts paid off when she rolled onto her back, asking for belly rubs.
She even learned how to play with a toy, something she had never experienced before.
As the weeks passed, Maple began to feel more at ease. But her past wasn’t entirely behind her. She started to slow down, and it became clear she was expecting one last litter.
Once again, her foster family gave her everything she needed. Maple carried six healthy puppies, and on Christmas Day, while others opened gifts, she delivered three daughters and three sons.
With Izzy and Tyler’s loving support, Maple raised her puppies until March, when each one left for their forever homes.
That marked a turning point for Maple.
On her first spring walk with Izzy and her foster sibling Riggley, Maple moved with a lightness and joy that hadn’t been seen before. Just days later, she surprised everyone by zooming through the house.

The little pug who once hesitated to leave her crate was now racing from room to room, finally living the life she was meant to have.
A Forever Family Finds Her
A few weeks later, a couple with experience rescuing pugs came to meet Maple. The moment they saw her, they knew she was meant to be part of their family.
“The minute we walked into the store, Maple ran right up to her new mom. It was like she knew this was supposed to be her person,” Maple’s foster parents wrote on Instagram.
Maple, now renamed Mabel, bonded instantly with her new mom. Though it was bittersweet for Izzy and Tyler to say goodbye, they knew she was finally home.
“We can’t change Maple’s past, but we can promise her a future filled with love, care and plenty of snuggles. From here on out, she’s safe, loved and will always have people looking out for her,” Mabel’s foster parents wrote on Instagram.
Thanks to the compassion of everyone who helped her along the way, Mabel now has the life she always deserved. Her journey is a testament to what can happen when people come together to help those who need it most.
