When a staff member at the Yakima Humane Society (YHS) arrived for his shift one morning, he expected a typical end-of-week routine. However, the scene that awaited him was anything but ordinary.
As he approached the shelter, a cardboard box was positioned right at the entrance. It was sealed shut with duct tape and bore the bold label, “Keep Frozen: Contents Perishable.”
As more staff members arrived, their concerns grew. Sadly, similar situations often lead to heartache, and the team feared the worst. Despite their apprehension, they carefully brought the box inside, determined to face whatever it contained.
A Startling Discovery Inside the Box

Once inside, staff placed the box on a nearby table and began to carefully inspect the contents. With the sound of tape being sliced open, everyone held their breath, unsure of what would emerge.
The team member slowly cut through the heavy duct tape, peeling back the layers one by one. As the final strips were removed and the box opened, tension in the room quickly shifted to astonishment and relief.

From within the box, two wide eyes blinked up at them. It was a cat, and she was very much alive, alert, and seemingly unharmed.
“They were glad to see an adult cat who was alive!” Kelli Peal, YHS’s adoption manager, told The Dodo.
This simple statement could not fully capture the sense of relief that flooded the room. The staff exhaled, overwhelmed by the fact that one small life had been spared. What began as a moment of fear turned into one of celebration.
Elsa’s Journey To Comfort And Care
The shelter staff were puzzled by the circumstances surrounding the cat’s abandonment but speculated that she had likely been left at the shelter overnight. Anger at the cruelty of the act soon gave way to a wave of compassion for the feline.
Given the box’s “Keep Frozen” label, the team decided to name her Elsa, inspired by the beloved princess from Frozen.

The team quickly made Elsa comfortable, preparing a kennel for her with food, water, and blankets to keep her warm. While waiting for veterinary staff to arrive, they made sure she had everything she needed to feel safe.
When the vet examined Elsa, they discovered a developing wound on her side, but fortunately, it was treatable. To ensure her safety and well-being during recovery, Elsa was placed in isolation and closely monitored.

Throughout this recovery period, the YHS staff showered Elsa with affection. Both staff and volunteers took turns petting her, speaking to her gently, and providing the calm presence she needed to regain her trust in people.
In no time, Elsa won the hearts of everyone at the shelter.
“Elsa is a staff favorite!” Peal said. “She is so loving and will vocalize and press up against her kennel for attention.”

As Elsa’s wound healed and her strength returned, preparations were made for her spay surgery. With this final step, she would be ready for adoption and to start a new life with a forever family.
A New Beginning Awaits Elsa

While the staff felt a pang of sadness knowing Elsa would eventually leave their care, their dominant emotion was joy. They were thrilled to see the “frozen girl” find a loving home and were proud of her resilience throughout the ordeal.
“She’s a wonderful cat who has been through a lot,” Peal said, “but she doesn’t seem shy at all and has no lingering effects from her abandonment.”
Then, to everyone’s delight, came the best news of all. Even before the shelter made an official announcement, a staff member shared a comment on YHS’s Facebook page, revealing that Elsa already had an adoption pending.
“Elsa has a pending adoption with an awesome family. ❤️,” Rachel Vincent wrote in the comment of the YHS Facebook post.
From the terrifying moment she was abandoned in a sealed box to the loving care she found at the shelter, Elsa’s journey was one of transformation. With dedicated staff members and a wonderful family waiting for her, she is now ready for a new chapter in her life.
Best of luck, Mrs. Frozen.
