The brutal heat of summer shows little mercy to pets, and it’s even tougher on stray animals already worn down by hunger, exhaustion, and loneliness.
Southern California’s famous sunshine may be loved by many, but for the growing number of animals left behind, those bright rays can become dangerous fast.
While walking through a park in Irvine, California, a woman spotted an odd white shape resting in the shade. When she stepped closer, she realized it was a small, terrified dog who desperately needed help.
Scared And Hesitant To Trust
The woman tried to approach, but the fluffy dog bolted in fear. Refusing to leave him to suffer, she contacted Suzette Hall, founder of Logan’s Legacy Dog Rescue in Irvine.
Suzette responded immediately, arriving to help the timid pup who was too wary to allow anyone close.
“He really needed help, but he just wouldn’t go to anybody. He would run away. Then he’d go back to his same spot behind the building, where it was shady and safe,” Suzette told The Dodo.
At the time, the temperature had reached 92°. The little dog trembled and was dehydrated, avoiding anyone who tried to approach.
Hall set up a humane trap with hot dogs, hoping hunger would coax him in. At first, the pup dashed away, and she prepared for another failed attempt.
Then, a remarkable moment occurred.
“He started to run from us, but then he did a double take. He sniffed the treats in the trap as he went by, and he turned around as fast as he could. He ran right into the trap,” Hall said.
It was the first time Hall had seen a dog respond so quickly and run directly into a trap. Within minutes, he was safely secured.
At Last, Safe And Comfortable
Hall transferred the dog into her air-conditioned van. His tongue lolled from heat exhaustion, but a sense of relief began to settle.
“I got about a few miles away, and I heard him sigh, and I looked back, he was fast asleep 💤 both eyes shut tight. He knew he was rescued,” Hall wrote on her Facebook.
The dog, now named Mulligan, was taken to Camino Pet Hospital for a complete examination. He received the medical attention he desperately required and was then placed into foster care.
“He’s so happy now, he just smiles all the time. He’s as sweet as can be. I really, really love him,” Hall said.
Mulligan is flourishing in his foster home, though he is still searching for a forever family to give him the love and stability he deserves.
