Stories of dogs forced to survive on their own have become painfully familiar, especially for people who dedicate their lives to rescue work.
For one caring rescuer in Houston, Texas, that reality came into sharp focus when she noticed a solitary dog lingering near a busy road.
He had been left behind by the very people he once trusted. After years of comfort and stability, the abrupt change left him confused, scared, and uncertain about anyone who approached.
Seeing his struggle, the rescuer made a quiet promise to help him feel secure again and guide him toward a safer future.
Determined To Try

Kristin Erwin, founder of Streetheart Project, a Houston-based nonprofit, knew rescuing a frightened roadside dog would not be straightforward.
Despite the challenge, she was determined. She had not anticipated a rescue that day, so her first step was to speak softly and hope the dog would approach.

The dog, later named Eggnog, had lost all trust after being abandoned. He did not respond and, still shaking, bolted before Kristin’s eyes, leaving her anxious for his safety.
Undeterred, she returned the next day with a new strategy.
We spotted this little guy running along a busy road. He looked lost and confused. I tried to get him to trust me but he wasn’t interested. I had to give up and leave but then I saw him again two days later. This time I had food packed with me. Once we got him home, he was still trembling but he let me handle him and pet him. This time, Kristin brought a humane trap and some highly appealing food. She set the food inside and left the door open, hoping hunger would coax Eggnog closer.
The plan succeeded. Cautious yet desperate, Eggnog crept forward.
Seeing no one nearby, he stepped in and began eating. When the door clicked shut, Kristin finally had the chance to remove him from the street.
From Fearful Trembles To Trusting Heart

Rescuing Eggnog was only the beginning.
Kristin knew the hardest work was still ahead. In his foster home, he showed no aggression, but the trembling was constant and undeniable.
With experience guiding her, Kristin moved slowly and patiently, allowing Eggnog to set the pace.
After several tense days, the first signs of change appeared. Eggnog began to relax, gradually understanding that this place was safe and that Kristin meant him no harm.

Soon, he transformed.
His tail wagged freely, he followed Kristin from room to room, and a genuine smile brightened his face.
While the road ahead still holds uncertainties, Eggnog’s path is clear. He is moving toward a future filled with love and security, far removed from the fear and abandonment of his past.
